Starting problem

Well here's what happens. I go to start my car and when I turn the key to start nothing happens. If I hold it for a couple seconds it starts to crank. It only does this 50% of the time. The rest of the time as soon as I turn the key it cranks. The car runs normally, it's just I don't feel like getting stranded somewhere and not having the car start. It looks like the starter/battery wires are all tight. The security light comes on then goes off after a couple seconds (I'm pretty sure it's supposed to do that anyway). Any ideas?

EDIT: the car is a 95 formula.

the same thing happened on my 96 monte carlo. it was the wire that runs down the steering column. i connects the chip in your key to the security system. ( i cannot remember the name of this system to save my life) they are vary fragile and will start to break causing it not to do anything from time to time. mine got worse and finally quit. you can either pull the steering wheel and fish the new wire(with the new switch) down the column or diconnect it under the dash from the old and connect to the new one and tie it up under the dash. then you do not have to have a key with a chip. of course i did this on a car that was a dd and did not gos about. if you want to do it right pull the wheel and have fun.

Re: Starting problem

It's funny that you brought this up. After I posted this I went outside and measured my resisance in the key. I then got some resistors (yes I have them laying around hahaha) and bypassed the VATS (that's what it's called), and haven't had a problem since. :D
