Start it up or be cautious

Hi everyone,

I am new to this board and need some advice.

I am picking up a '94 Z28 A4 today that has engine noise. It has been sitting since '99. The body and interior is in good condition, the engine is supposed to be the only problem.

The guy says he started it about 2 years ago and moved it a little in his driveway.

I haven't heard the noise yet, but I would like to know what you think I should do. Should I start it up or not? If I start it, what do I need to look at or be listening for? Or am I better off just pulling the engine to keep from damaging it more.

Do the LT1's have common problems, if so what are they?

By the way is it worth $1000? I think it is.

Thanks in advance,
invhtrods

Well...the only way to know for sure if it is safe to start is to have a discription of the sound. It could anything. If you are planning to do a buildup with the motor I would just say pull it and build it. If you are looking to leave it realitively stock for now I would think you would have to start it to get an idea of what you are looking at here. I wouldn't go throwing money at the car hoping you fix the problem, start it up, and it still does it.

Thats what I was thinking. Start it up and see if I can tell how bad it is hurt.

I'll be picking it up in a couple hours. I can't wait to get it home.

Later,

I got the car home, but it won't start.

I checked the oil, tranny, and coolant levels before I attempted to start it. I also drained most of the old fuel out of the tank and checked the air filter. I put about 1.5 gallons of fresh fuel in the tank, installed a fresh battery, and tried to start it several times but no luck.

It turns over quick and smooth but doesn't seem to be firing??? I heard no noise while it was turning over either.

I pulled the #1 plug and checked for spark and had it. I checked for fuel pressure to be present, it sprayed some out, but I have no gauge.

Any suggestions?? I am gonna try to work on it again tomorrow.
