Spark Plug Wire Opinions

Where are the best places to get 8mm plug wires? I am interested in the Taylor Sprio-Pro 8mm Plug Wires (94 LT1) and the best price I can find them is for $49.99 (thunder racing)..anyone know of a cheaper place to get them? Or..what brands have good quality that are comparable to these Taylor wires..for a better price maybe..
Are the ones at the Auto stores any good? Ive never replaced them on my 94..only my 92 which was a smaller V8 (305). Any help at all as far as where to get them (links, prices, etc) and something that can resist a good amount of heat too..I still have stock exhaust manifolds (no money for headers) even though I have more than stock components on my car
Lastly..I should noticed a difference between the 8mm and my stock 7mm that are on them now right? Two of my wires are actually sliced almost in half..not sure if I did this pulling them out or if this is my reason for my heavy stumble I've been having..but I want something with some strength!
Thanks guys!

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

I've had MSD 8mm wires before and I was pretty happy with them, except I couldn't route them through the stock locations on the passenger side.
I've heard a lot of people complain about Taylor wires, so I probably wouldn't buy them. On a different note, I have stock 40K+ mile wires on my new engine (headers/cam) and the dyno is clear and smooth. If I were to replace them, I'd probably get GM stock wires.

places to get them from:
www.ls1speed.com
www.thunderracing.com

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

I did check Summit, their online catalog showed I believe..$42.99 for the same Taylors..but I wasnt sure if they were the exact same. Ive checked most of the popular places/sites.
I havent heard about the difficulties in getting the 8mm's to fit any worse than the 7mms..I cant imagine only a few mm's between the four wires causing that much of a pain..but I suppose its possible. The problem with stock GM wires is..they probobly cost three times those that are aftermarket (bigger/less arching/more spark etc) and are still probobly only 7mm(?). Anything GM is REDICULOUSLY over charged..Im not just talking somewhat either. They are not even a consideration..I would NEVER buy or have work done at a dealership. I can do ALMOST anything they can do for free... Know what a dealership wants for a stock Bose Cd player..the EXACT replacement in my 94Z???? $1350!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONE stock replacement Salad shooter I purchased for $40 shipped on this forum..the dealership wanted $625 for ONE wheel!!!!!!!
Anyways..so what is supposedly bad about the Taylor? My friend has them on his 93Z and hasnt had any complaints. He did say 8.5 or 10 for sure would be too much (overkill and size is bigger). Is it the quality or something? Maybe they break easily at the boots or something??
Can I get an OTC for my stock manifolds by the way? I know its $50 more than regular wires..but its way easier and that would eliminate the whole 'harder to fit' problem.
Keep them coming guys..thanks

A vote against the taylors. Did over the valve covers with them cut to length. Dried out pretty fast and always had problems with them.

MSD is used by most racers for a reason their goods work. 8mm is more than enough for our cars. Have had 2 sets of MSD with no complaints.

I too had the Taylors with little success. I went MSD 8.5's and never looked back.

I know theres' ALWAYS two sides to any opinion...but it seems this is going more in one direction than the other...so..on that note..where can I get LT1 prepped (pre-cut no crimping/etc) MSD 8mm's for my 94Z? And what price am I gonna be looking at compared to the Taylors..assuming more due to the name and the quality?

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

I have taylor 8mm wires and the ovc looms, bought the kit from Thunder Racing. The only problem I had was getting the opti boots on. As soon as I found the WD40 tip .....like butter I don't see why people have had problems with them. Working excelent for me!! As far as using OVC looms without having headers. I havent heard of anyone doing that with the stock manifolds. I would think that it would be verry dificult to keep them away from the manifolds. I would think that Taylor and MSD wires would perform equaly well . Just a matter of whats cheaper I guess

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

I put in a set of MSD 8.5s when I put the LTs in and did my custom routing job (no OVC) and I have 15k on them with zero problems.
I never have liked Taylors, too many problems.

I went back to near-stock routing too - seems to work better.

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

I prefer the Accel Extreme 9000 wires, and have had several bad experiences with MSD's. It's like anything else, YMMV though. The majority of the time you hear someone complaining about wires is due to installer negligence. Take care in routing them and most any brand will be fine. Don't waste time overthinking it, unless your wires are bad, you're not gonna see any difference and you're gonna need every bit of time on the install!

I like the Accel's because they're a bit more forgiving it you get close to heat sources (any wire will fail if laid directly on the header) and fit nicely.

I vote for Moroso Blue Max spiral core wires. I have them on my 96Z, they fit perfect, and performance is great. I think they're like $50 most places.

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

So a few have actually mentioned the Taylors are bad..but no one really even said one EXACT reason..is this opinion from people who have HEARD or actually have experienced problems with the Taylors? I agree with BlownF1 that its usually the installers that are at fault for faulty products..failing to install correctly the distance from headers or around sharp objects causing them to fray or crack..im talking quality of them if you install correctly..So with that in mind..now your thoughts and comments on the Taylors. (I would put money on atleast HALF of the failures of products are negligence of saftey precausions mentioned on boxes )

Re: Spark Plug Wire Opinions

Just my personal experience: I've had the Taylors fall apart and crack excessively before. The MSD's are in the same location and have held up fine. You do the math.
