SLP Shorty question

SLP Shorty question

I just finished the driver's side installation of my SLP shorties. There's a black plastic cover that goes over the steering column near the firewall that's close to the header; it's gonna burn for sure. Is it ok to leave the plastic cover off? I'd post a photo but not sure how to on this board........
