slp headers?
I was thinking about geting a set of slp headers, plus the loud mouth exhaust. Is this a good set up?
|
Re: slp headers?
thats what im running now- had a real good increase in performance with them and since i had to keep her street legal for a salvage inspection it was my only choice- just be aware that its loud but not as deep as another catback would be and the second u get rid of your cat(s) it will sound like crap...
;) at this point however im considering moving to longtubes in spring - |
Re: slp headers?
SLP's are one of if not the best shorty header avail. for the LTx car's! Cant' go wrong w/ that.. As far as the loudmouth.. I'd look into somthing else .. They are obnoxiously loud! esp. w/ headers...

Re: slp headers?
I LOVE my loudmouth slp header combo ,it sounds awesome. Also I believe the slps are considered mid lengths. I gained 2 tenths in the quarter just with the loudmouth replacing a turbo style muffler

Re: slp headers?
Wonder if those behind you think the same thing?.. ;).. I'm just stating from personal exp. I have removed 2 loud mouth sys.'s off of car's in the last 3 months' after a header install.. Just too loud IMO..

Re: slp headers?
Just so happens I have a set of SLP stainless headers for sale right now! :) They fit '96-'97 dual cat F-bodies, and are emissions legal. Used one summer. In great shape, $275 shipped (about 1/2 price of new).
Drop me an email or PM if you're interested. |
Re: slp headers?
The '96-'97 style is a shorty header. Not a mid or long tube design. If you don't need to worry about emmisions, I would look into a nice midlength or long tube header instead.
I agree, the loudmouth doesn't sound good without cats, with or without headers. Dan |
Re: slp headers?
:D ha- so to compare sounds of loudmouth with headers- to open headers i drove back from rochester to connecticut (325 miles) with an open y-pipe-
and OMG sounds sooo much nicer -- about same noise level though |
Re: slp headers?
How is the plug access with the SLP's? Also are they direct fit to the cats on a 97, or are modifications needed? Finally, would it sound better with a Borla cat-back than a loudmouth?
|
Re: slp headers?
yes direct fit- stock y-pipe will work , that was actually reason i got them - manifolds were cracked and i had a salvage inspection- so figured stay legal and get a bit more performance
plug access still sucks- the primaries are 1 3/4 so u dont have much room, but its doable- took me 11 hours the first time cause i got a socket wedged between the plug and a primary- and as far as sound - i personally love the way it sounds with stock cats and loudmouth- its no where near as loud as people seem to describe- i assume without the cats would be much louder but also heard that soudns like crap- so i would asssume a borla would sound very nice especially with the adjustable plates.. |
Re: slp headers?
ohh if u do go with them - get a set of locking bolts- the ones that come in the install package SUCK - they back out about every 4 weeks and u constantly have to keep checking them
|
Re: slp headers?
so should I get the instal kit or not? if the bolts suck, then maybe I should use the money for the kit to get some better gaskets? or maybe using some loc-tite would correct the problem.

Re: slp headers?
[QUOTE=kingman109]yes direct fit- stock y-pipe will work [QUOTE]
So I take it you could use an aftermarket SLP Y-Pipe and it would still fit right? |
Re: slp headers?
Its your best shorty option, there 1 3/4...slp makes top notch exhaust products....

Re: slp headers?
AWESOME headers! I love mine. Install kit is pretty pointless. I bought the kit thinking it was necessary for installation. This was before I knew much about cars/Camaro's in general. The bolts are nothing but trouble and the gaskets are pieces of trash. I had to order two sets of SLP gaskets. I doublestacked them and they work great...but I shouldn't have to do that. Get the headers, get a good set of LOCKING bolts and some good quality gaskets. You'll love em.
