I went with the lt4 lifetime warrenty deal from auto zone mainly cause i get a discount threw work and it was stocked on the shelf. My car was doin the exact same thing as yours when i pulled my starter off, the wire that connects the cylnoid to the actuall starter was burnt. So i say buy the 96 vette starter vin code 5 from the zone for 120 bux and wrap it in insulation.

Well i let mine drag untill it completly quit, It would start slow then after a few slow lugs would spin fast. Before you jusmp out and buy the starter make sure the alternator and the battery is good check and double check. My starter acted like a old car with the timing turned way up, then it finally gave up. Also check those connections theres one on the motor mount on the pass side of the block, the lil connection on the fender well in the lil red thing and then most importantly the battery cable ends there should be no curription. The reason i went with autozones starter then cromer was because the gm one prolly has a one or 2 year warrrenty and the zone is lifetime. plus if you get cromer and that thing goes out once a year the shipping will eat you up. but hey thats your decision, each for there own :cool: . Also a starter drags worse when the get hot. a battery loses power after it sits then the alternator charges it back after driving, that would make it fire better when warm. i know this was long but i hope it helps in you problem.
