Slow Cranking When Hot (Fast When Cold) Normal?

Is a engine suppose to be harder or easier to turn over hot? I guess parts expand and things become tighter when hot but my LT1's starter can barley turn over (with a brand new 800cca battery) when hot but a cold start cranks right over and fires right up. Its quite hard to start when hot. Is this normal? or does this suggest that some tolerances are to tight in my motor?

Thank you for the help:-)

Check your battery cable connections at both ends. As heat goes up, so does resistance. A questionable connection will be OK cold, and do what you describe when hot.

Same thing happened to my car till I got it fixed. It ended up being the starter. Once I got a new starter she starts right up every time with no sluggish cranking.

Either that or his headers are heating up the starter. If the headers are too close to it, he can put some heat shielding on it and see oif that helps.

Starter. Replace it before it leaves you somewhere.

And one other thing, a starter that is going out like that, increases it's current draw as time goes by so it draws down the battery more and more with each crank. To the point that starting batteries should not be brought down to continuously. If it were a deep cycle battery, not a problem. But starting batteries don't like to go down very far continuously.

So it will destroy your battery and put a load on the alternator.

Completely agree....replace today!

that makes sence. It must be the starter. the battery I had in there was only a year old and under waranay. Glad it got replaced. Starter coming soon. Thank you for the input everyone I will post the results when I get a new starter.

One possibility......Had this problem after having an intake leak ...the starter terminals had oil on them ...cleaned em with first break cleaner. Then electrical cleaner. Fixed it ....starts fine now when hot
