Should you be able to push down a lifter by hand?

Once the lifter has been used and is full of oil, should you be able to push the pushrod cup down by hand?
I can push several down by hand just by putting a little force on the back part of the rocker, pushing directly down on the pushrod.
Per my other post about noisey lifters/rockers, these are new Cady lifters.
The stockers were all rock hard when I pulled them out.
Before, adjusting the rocker lash with the stockers, as soon as you hit zero lash, you couldn't turn the poly lock by hand.
With several of these, you can, not all of them, but several you can and they have about 10 minutes run time on them now.

Are these the LS7 lifters or the GM racing lifters supposedly good to 8500 rpm? I just got a set of the racing ones and I'd like as much info as I can get about them.

Some lifters have different bleed rates compared to others. My Comp R's were like that. You could see the lifters immediately start to bleed off as soon as the engine was shut off.
I'd say what you are experiencing is normal. When I would adjust valves with those lifters I would just make sure to stop the adjusting nut right when I would feel the slightest resistance and then make my pre-load adjustment.

Thanks for the info. These are the Cadillac Racing lifters, I have a spare set in the box, but I think I'm just going to pull the intake and throw the stockers back in, these are so noisey the knock counts / retard is going off constantantly non-stop. My truck has the stock lifters and they are quiet as stock with the same cam.
A couple of them are soft while the others are hard, so if it is the bleed rate, I'd think it would be consistant across all of them.

Nope. Because after the engine is shut off some lifters are being compressed by the springs, which will cause them to bleed down, while others are not.

Would you be willing to sell a few of the gmpp lifters? I had valve float eat up a few of mine and I can't find anyone to sell just a few of them.

Good point, I can't say I noticed the loose ones before I had rotated the crank some depressing and releasing some.

If I end up not using the set in the car now I'm sure I can, the other set I have I'll probably return if I can. About to go try a near full turn preload and see how they come out..

GM specs them at .060" preload, and I found that to be 3/4 turns with my 7/16 studs. I used a dial indicator to find it. I had them setup at 3/4 turns and 1/16th turns and they were just as noisy at 3/4 as 1/16 turns though.

I'm setting to 7/8 turn now just see if there's difference.

So yours are very noisey also??

2QUIK6 Sep 30, 2007 12:34 PM

Pass side to 7/8 turn, there's satill 2 or 3 on the pass side that are way louder than the rest. The others can can barely here thru the stephoscope.
Going to just tighten a loud one down further to see what happens now that I have the cover off and it running, but it looks like the intake will be coming off shortly, I'm of the opinion that these Caddy lifters are trash.

Well, tightening down a full turn made no difference...so then I had the bright idea to try putting lash caps on since the heads/valves originally had lash caps due to the springs and retainers that were on there...as far as I know the valves are hard and lash caps were not needed for that...
So the lash caps added .12" in length, so I swapped out the pushrods too to the 7.30" length from the 7.15" and now that has just abvout eliminated all the noise......have no explanation why that would do it but it did...
Haven't driven it, but at idle its mucho quieter....to tired to go drive around now...maybe in the morning..I'm exhausted.

well no more knock sensor being set off so I'm happy, its still more chatter than my truck is so I may still change out the lifters one day when I'm bored.
