Setting Preload on Roller Rockers

Hey I have adjusted my roller rockers several different times using shoebox's website. after zero lash go 1/2 turn to set the preload. Well I can barley stand the tick noise and I was looking in My chiltons and Hp Lt1 book and both said Set to 1 turn.

Would there be any harm done if I went 1 full turn after zero lash?

Thanks
Josh

1 turn is often the book recommendation for stock. My site says 1/2-3/4 or so. 1/2 should be plenty to make them quiet. As noted on my website, there are some lifters you don't want to put 1 turn on.

I don't know what lifters you have, but you can try 1 turn if you want. I have my doubts that you will notice a difference in noise. It may not run as well, either (then, again, you may never notice). Less lash generally enables more power and lessens the chance of valve float at high RPM.

So what your telling me is that the Book's recommends 1 turn could hurt the performance and that a little less preload will peak my performance?

Thanks you. I have been googling it quite a bit and I have decided that I will try 3/4 turn. I will just have to live with the noise of roller rockers.

Sorry: I am using Stock Lifters with 90K miles.

Thanks Shoebox,
Josh

Update: After using 3/4 turn after zero lash, the Car runs great... much better noise quailty too.

Not to hijack but I am planning to do the same this weekend. Did you do this with the car running? Did you loosen all of the set screws first? How long did it take you?

From what I have read, With the engine running is preferred. I like to spin the crank but thats because I know my mark is correct. Also with it running you may only want to do one at a time.

As I often have said before, there are several different ways to set lifter preload and all of them will work IF DONE CORRECTLY.

Just remember, more important than how many turns you make is that the lifter has to be on the base circle of the camshaft lobe when you find ZERO lash. If the lifter is on the lobe's ramp, you won't be at ZERO lash and all else that follows (setting preload) won't be correct. You must be ABSOLUTELY sure that the lifter is sitting on the base circle/heel of the lobe.

As a point of reference, I installed new heads on my son's 96 Vette last week and I set his preload (stock lifters) at 3/4 turn from ZERO lash using the IC/EO method. His setup is as quiet as a church mouse and I you'd be hard pressed to tell he's running Scorpion 1.7 RRs.
