Re: Security-won't start

ignition lock cylander or something to that effect is prolly dead i had the same thing happen to my 94 ended up costing 400 to get it fixed but you can get a tune from madz28.com that will disable the vats comp so you can start it again plus you can pick up a few horses
good luck with it

Mine likes to do that all the time also...i just unhook the battery for a bit and hook it back up...then it starts...sometimes.

On my Tech Page there is a wiring diagram of the Passkey system. You can't just bypass a relay and everything be ok. If you have a key cylinder problem, there are also instructions to bypass that portion.

You can search for "security" on this website for plentiful threads (mostly in general tech) on the matter.

Re: Security-won't start

shoebox-I've been trying to measure the resistance on the key pallet and my numbers are no where near yours on your website. If I use position 200 on meter it just stays at 1 if I use 2k I get 7.46 if I use 20k I get 07.5 if I use 200k I get 7.5 if I use 2m I get .008 if I use 20m I get .01. Can you or someone shed any light on this? I'm a rookie using multimeters. Thanks

Re: Security-won't start

Looks like you are closest to 7640 ohms. That would put you in the range of pellet 13. If you measure this at the key, measure again at the connector under the dash. It should be nearly the same if the cylinder is ok. If not, then the cylinder or it's wiring has a problem. You can always try cleaning the contacts in the key cylinder.

Re: Security-won't start

I was thinking of doing the bypass using your radio shack resistor method but, how will I know what ohm resistor to get 7460? I will check the resistance of the steering wheel side of the harness when I take the connector apart. If it's not 7460 or in my case 7.46 then can I assume that the unit in the column is bad and go for the radio shack resistor? I'm mainly confused on how to select the proper resistor from radio shack. Should I get a resistor that matches what ever I get from the connector (on the steering wheel side) or as close as I can get? By the way I tried using compressed air in a can and alcohol on quetip on the cylinders with no luck. Probably no other way to clean cylinders without taking steering wheel off? It has been sitting for a long time. thanks agin.

Re: Security-won't start

Based on your key pellet reading, you get a resistor (or combination of them) to equal something in the range specified for the pellet (listed on my page). I would try to get something in the middle of the range, because most cheap resistors have a 10% variation tolerance.

Re: Security-won't start

Thanks shoebox the car was towed to the dealer yesterday. I'll be calling them in the morning. When they quote me $500 (if it's the cylinder) I'll measure the resistance at the connector (in the parking lot) and go to radio shack for the resistor(s) (and get one as close to the middle range of pallet 13 as passible) and give that a try. Hopefully all I will have to pay is the diognostic charge. Thanks agin I do appretiate your help.

Re: Security-won't start

my opinion on this is reprogram the pcm and have the whole system taken out. If you are bypassing it anyways, you won't get any benefit from the system at all (if there is any, seems to be more of a headache than anything).

Re: Security-won't start

It worked thanks to shoebox! I called the dealer early in the a.m. and told them to hold on the diognostic so I didn't even have to pay that fee! Thanks agin to everyone. I ask how much they would have charged to change out the cylinder and they siad $370. It cost me $2
