running car without thermostat?
running car without thermostat?
I'm trying to get my car to cool a little better. I am thinking about pulling the guts out of a thermostat and running. Any thoughts? I know that some restriction in the cooling system is needed to allow the coolant to stay in the radiator so it can be cooled. Will doing this actually make the car run hotter? I am also aware of open and closed loop problems. Right now on a hot day, mycar will run at 200 degrees. I have a 160 thermo in there along with the fan tune. Any ideas on this?
You really need all the parts of the long, reverse flow thermostat . The part that extends on the bottom when the thermostat is open, seals off passages to route the coolant for efficient system operation.
Ummm, I would highly suggest that you DO NOT run WITHOUT a thermostat unless you reprogram BOTH of your fans to come on immediately when you turn on your car.
My 95 camaro never had a damn thermostat, thanks to the retard owner before me. To make a long story short, my car didn't have one, also, the owner before me programmed only ONE fan to turn on high speed. He cut a wire and wired it up to a stupid little box that controlled the fan. Because of that, the OTHER fan never came on. So in short, the damn thing would always overheat on a hot/warm day.
So, thanks to a fellow friend I know that works for the chevy dealer, he took the time to wire up everything and put it back to stock. I got a thermostat put back in, and the fans fixed. Now both go on when their supposed to. Car doesn't over heat no more, thank god.
Stupid jack *** before me.... (@*&$)(@*$)(*
Sorry, hehe. Had to vent a little, carry on
[Edit] Forgot one thing, i can FINALLY use the A/C now without it overheating!

The coolant would flow through the radiator too fast and not get a chance to cool enough thus overheating the car, prolly wouldn't make a difference if you had 2 fans or 1 it will overheat.
IMO, you should set your fans to come on at a lower temp. Either that or buy or make a manual fan switch. Whichever, it is worth the $$/time when you can sit idling in traffic in 95* weather with the A/C on and the needle hangs around 170-180. FWIW

Yeah keep the thermo. You could get an electric water pump. It brought my temps down and gave me close to 10hp. I had my car worked on one time (BIG MISTAKE) and they forgot to put the air deflector back on. This caused the car to run considerably hotter also. Nowadays I do all the work myself. I can't trust anyone to do a good job.
