Richmond gear users???

Do any of you guys *NOT* experience whining from the rear? I got a really good deal on a set of brand new 3.42's and am having doubts due to everyone saying they whine like crazy.

Any help is appreciated

What do you consider a "good deal"?

The guy that I got these off of totalled his car before he got a chance to install them. He liquidated all of his parts and sold the brand new gears to me for $75 with the install kit.

My question is does anybody use these gears and not have a horrible whine from the rear??

Thanks

I can't remember exactly who, but there have been those that have posted use of Richmonds without whine. If you get a good shop to set them up, they should not whine.

Good price alright. Have no experience with Richmonds. Some say they are quiet, however the consensus has been that they are in fact noisey on our cars.

You apparently have an A-4, in which case I would suggest going to a 3.73. I'm not sure that you have a 3 series carrier and could use the 3.42s anyway without stepping up to a 3 Series. Someone?

Setting up the gears correctly is important too. Probably even a quieter gear, if not set up properly can be noisey.

If you do want lower gears, I suggest going with GM OEM gears and using a Solid spacer and shim kit.JMHO

Sometimes less expensive in the short term means more expensive in the longer run.JMHO

They are hard to get right I guess mine were whining while they were still in the car, but at that price go for it.

Why not ask yourself: What if they make noise?

Will you want to change them out?

If most say they have experienced noise, do you want to take a chance that you will be one of the lucky ones?

Personally, I wouldn't care if they were "free".

If there was a good chance that I would regret the decision to install them (or pay to have them installed) I would sooner sell them to someone else and take the less risky road. But that's just me. Let us know how it turns out.

they make gears from 2.73 to 4.11 for a series 2.

if he has the 3.42s for a series 3 carrier, they will not work on a series 2, and vice versa.

I do have an A-4 and I do have a 2 series carrier. I am going from 2.73 to 3.42 2 series. I think that I will try my luck. I have a pretty good mechanic that is going to install them and he is giving me the no whine guarantee . He says that he has set up over a thousand rear ends and has had no problems. We shall see.

Thanks for the responses

I was one of them. I have had them for approx. 70,000 with no whine. I agree with shoe, it all depends are how they are set up.

According to my gear guy, IF A GEAR IS SET UP RIGHT..IT WILL NOT WHINE. Its a comon excuse for wanna be gear installer to tell custumers that little whine is OK....If u get new gears/bearings and the guy that sets em up knows what he is doing, they will not whinne.

A few years ago I called Richmond concerning the whine of their gears and they told me that the whine was due to the way the gear is cut. Ever car that I have been in with Richmonds whine like crazy.

You can see, though, that they can be set up not to whine. Yes, they may be cut in a way that makes them a little harder to set up not to whine. Like xxsaint69x said, that just give the installer an excuse if he cannot get it adjusted or does not want to take the extra time to get it right. IMO, everyone that is settling for whiney gears (no matter what brand) is settling for something they should not have to.

The cars that I have driven in were all setup by people (very **** when is comes to installing gears) that know their stuff when it comes to installing gears. My buddy helped me install a set of Strange gears in my car and it went flawless ( No whine).
