Removing SLP header.
I will be removing my SLP shortie from the Pass side in order to have the EGR tube rewelded.
Anyone experience the easiest way to remove this header? Does it come out the bottom or top? I become depressed just looking at that mess. Thanks. BTW, I just installed a new K&N oil filter. I was hoping I wouldn't have to remove that to get the header out. :( |
Don't get intimidated, a header is a header is a header. Did you install the header yourself? If you installed it you can uninstall it, it's no different than you pulling off your ex. manifolds and you can even see your header bolts instead of those totally hidden manifold bolts.
You're taking out the pass. side right? So why would you need to pull off your K&N oil filter, just leave it in place. Get the car in the air, disconnect the battery and remove the driver's side cat from the d/s header and the pipe where it bolts up to under the car. Unbolt the pipe from the p/s header flange, remove the bolts where the pipe connects into your pipe going toward the muffler and twist and pull forward to remove the cat-pipe. Unbolt the starter and remove it. Go up top and remove the alt. go back down and remove the plugs and start to loosen the header bolts from below that you can reach. Don't take them all out yet just get them loose. Go up top and loosen any header bolts you can get at from the top. Chances are the oil dipstick might be in the way so you might have to remove that. Unplug the O2 sensor at the header and the rest of the header bolts and the pass header should come out from the bottom. You might have to angle it and twist it slightly to clear the heater box but it'll come out from the bottom. Also disconnect the AIR valve from the header first that'll give you more room. When you finish welding your tube back on, check your flanges on the header with a straight edge and the converter pipes and make sure they are square so when you reinstall everything you won't have an exhaust leak. Take care not to overtighten any bolts so that warping won't be an issue. Clean all surfaces with a scrapper to remove old ex. gskt material and use new gskts. then reverse your removal procedure. I've never had my headers off but I did install them myself, if they can go on they'll come off. Good luck and hope this helps you. Tony |
