I believe it is recommended. I would to keep them from leaking oil everywhere.

You shouldn't have to replace it if it is newer. I installed a new set five years ago and just removed my valve covers the other day. They were like new yet!

Its recommended, but I've pulled my valve covers several times and not replaced the gaskets. If you are using cork gaskets then definitely replace them. If they're rubber, chances are you'll be ok.

I've removed the valve covers several times with the factory rubber gaskets and haven't had any issues with oil leakage.

As long as the gaskets are not cracked or hardened then they are fine. I think those type of gaskets will actually outlast an engine.
