Remove CAT Yes or No

Hi
I have a Magnaflow catback exhaust sitting in my room which going to get put in tomorrow. Well originally I wanted to gut the CAT. But the my friend who's helping me said that it might smell like rotten eggs in traffic. So I did a search and read few threads and also noticed few people saying that I need a PCM tune to take the cat out. So My question is if I gut the cat tomorrow when I am installing the system, Is it going to cause problems? Also I don't plan to get a pcm tune anytime soon. So should I just leave the cat the way it is? Thank you in advance for all the help and suggestions.

Don't gut the cat. Remove it and put a straight pipe in it's place. That way if you ever need it in the future, you can slap it back up there. You will not need a tune afterwards.

(I assume you don't have emmisions, either)

Well I have emission over here but I just passed it few months ago so I got 2 years on it....after that I probably find a way. So there's shouldn't be any need for pcm tune or car acting wierd except the fact that the car is gonna run rough without the car. How about the smell...

I don't know why you would need a new tune just because you took the cat out. I put new heads and cam on my 94 z, a much more drastic adjustment than removing the cat, and it ran fine without a tune (probably not optimally, but fine.) I don't know about a possible smell from a gutted cat.

you aren't gonna gain much by gutting or replacing a cat

I would say keep it on there. You may gain a small amount of horsepower (most likely no SOTP difference) but your car might start to smoke, run rich, sound a little more raspy, and possibly have a bad smell. Mine did all of the above. A tune from Ion took care of the smoke and running rich though. I would just leave the thing on there unless its easier not to.

I haven't had mine for over a year now and I have noticed no smell or other adverse affects. It didn't have a negative effect on the sound and this way if I do somthing that might make the car run rich for a period, I don't have to worry about burning up the thing. (its hapened once)

I had my CAT removed when I had my exhaust hooked up to my headers. As far as being raspier, yeah it makes it a little bit raspier, but I think it sounds better. The exhaust does smell different, but it's not like rotten eggs. Removing the CAT on a 94 won't set off any engine codes either. I say do it.

Re: Remove CAT Yes or No

I took my y pipe to a muffler shop and had the cat cut out and gutted. We then welded a straight pipe through the middle of the convertor and welded it all back together. So now its a y pipe that appears to have a stock convertor in it but its actually a straight pipe. I have since put macs and an off road pipe in my car. If you would be interested in buying my set-up and keeping your original y pipe/convertor, I'd sell it for $20 plus shipping. p.m. me if interested. Its off a 95 TA.
I had no issues with the car running any different at all. It just ran better!

Re: Remove CAT Yes or No

i have a 95, i get SES light popping on and off on occasion, but i dont know what it is since i dont know how to run it. i have no cat, and its a raspier sound and i on occasion get a smell, but nothing bad or lasting. if anything i get a stronger exhaust smell, but the rotten eggs smell is very rare. mine was removed because it was apparently overheating according to the previous owner. there is no reason to remove it unless its malfunctioning in some way IMO.

Get ri of that thing and leave it off!! Cats are garbage and if anything, taking it off will give you more power, i've had mine off for 2 years now and i love and there is no bad smell or any problems as far as running rich or anything like that my car is a 94Z 28 M6. Hope that helps.

Re: Remove CAT Yes or No

Put the Magnaflow on, drive the car a month or so, and THEN decide. This decision will be best made by having someone drive your car while you drive a different one so you can get a feel for how loud you are to others.

Pulling the CAT will make you louder.

Re: Remove CAT Yes or No

I have a Magnaflow on my car right now with the cat. If I had any other exhaust I would say cut the cat off. With the Magnaflow there is no way I would remove it. You would have nothing what so ever to muffle the right exhaust pipe. It would sound like no muffler at all. The Magnaflow is very loud with the cat. Louder than my SLP 2 on the left with no cat.
