reinstalling balancer

well i got to looking on here.. and i couldnt find a thread on putting the crank pulley back on. the manual says to make a mark and be sure to put it back on the same way, long story short i didnt do that. now there is the arrow on the pulley and the ridge on the hub.. is this what you line up? im wondering if this could cause some of my vibration isuues, maybe ive had it on wrong since my last opti? thanks

The arrow denotes TDC, so technically you can put the pulley back on anyway you want you just won't know what TDC is the next time you rotate the motor over. To reinstall the hub, get a threaded rod about 6-8 inches long and a large nut with washer to go onto it. Thread the rod into the crank and turn the nut on the rod to push the hub home on the crank snout. Do not use the crank hub bolt to push the hub on as you can easily strip the crank threads out and make your life much much harder. Good luck.

Plus make sure you get Grade 8 rod and bolt as you don't want that sucker breaking off inside the crank.

The pulley can go on the hub only one way. The hub can go on any way, but it is best to line it up, too.

I don't believe any LT1 has a key for the balancer. There is a cut back key that drives the timing set and, on the 96/97 OBD2 cars, the CPS reluctor. While there is a keyway in the crank, there isn't on the damper hub....

Correct, I was denoting if he had the hub off as well. Since the pulley can only mount to the hub one way, then if the hub is installed in a different position - the pulley will be off as well if he wants to keep his TDC mark accurate.

that was my biggest concern was which way should i put the pulley on the hub.. seems like it will fit either of the 3 ways. engine is totally apart now, but what do i line the arrow up with on reassembly? thanks

The arrow doesn't line up with anything, it tells you when the motor is at TDC (top dead center) when the arrow is pointing up. As shoebox said the pulley can only mount to the hub one way as the bolt holes are slightly off. If you didn't take the crank hub off then you should be able to get the pulley back exactly where it was before.

Ok.. i did take the hub off. i will just see which way fits the best with the pulley while theyre both off, because seems to me i can put it on any way and it fits pretty good.. as far as lining the arrow up with something, there is a distinct "ridge", if you will, on the hub i just thought i could reference the arrow to that spot..

The hub will fit any way on the crank snout but there is only one way the pulley bolts to the hub. The bolt holes are spaced nonsymetrically....

Gotcha.. maybe ive just been lucky cuz ive never checked to see if it was goin on right before, nor has it ever not gone on right.. anyway, not a big deal.. front of the crank is internally balanced anyway thanks everyone for the help

The arrow on the pulley lines up with the cast mark on the hub. It has to, because the pulley cannot bolt to the hub any other way. You may think it can go on any of 3 ways, but it cannot.
