Rebuilding a 4L60E myself, at home.
 

I'm really not interesting in hearing "that's crazy..." so don't bother :)

Has anyone attempted it? My tranny is fine now, and I suspect it will be fine for the time being while I have (hopefully soon) just a hotcam. I want to strenghten the tranny before I spray the car though.

Some terms I've heard thrown around are

"billet servo"
"kevlar bands"
"extra clutch packs"

I'm no tranny expert, but I'm good w/ tools and so is my dad & a few friends. I know I'll need a full 4L60E manual, any suggestions?

I'd love to see pics of a torn apart 4L60E if someone has them... anywho, I'd like to hear from experience, including the tranny builder experts we have around here :)

From what i understand you just have to be rather CLEAN (ie NO DIRT) and the order of certain parts is absolutely CRITICAL. for one who takes his time, has the necessary manuals, and some mechanical knowledge can accomplish a transmission rebuild. In fact i plan on doing the same and rebuild my trans myself too.

this is at the least probably one year down the road.. still need to buy/install the cam and get the best out of that. :)

I'm in the midst of a 700r4 rebuild which is basically the same as the 4l60e.

It isn't really THAT hard. What it is, is time consuming and you need to keep track of the parts. Also you will need some specialized tools such as the rear clutch spring compressor and the regular clutch spring compressor that mounts in a vice on the bench. You will also need some other specialized tools for the 4l60e probably the same ones as for the 700r4.

Don't get scared though, you don't need all of them! But do expect to pay a good amount of cash on tools in addition to the parts.

And pick up the manuals as well as the video.

Very cool Mike.. good stuff there and definitely do not plan to do this on a weekend. Definitely will have a second car to run around in for that tear down :)

Your a motivated young chap arn't you...:D I'll just let FLP handle my rebuild. ;) However do make a write up with plenty of pics. It will always come in handy...:bow:

So did you decide on the 3600 stall yet? (when i rebuild this tranny is when the bigger converter goes in....) :)

I am going to go with the 3600 but I just don't know when. As you know times a little tough in buisness right now. $$$$ is a bit harder to make. This grown up, wife, mortgage $h*t is for the birds....:cry: Actually the wife is cool its everything else....:cry: :cry: FLP is waiting for me though with a good price...:D

I'm borderline to finally being employed again.. have to finish up some background checks and I should be good to go and making decent money again.

I did mine, it's not crazy.
I did have to come up with creative way's of pulling and installing parts. For example I made my own spring compressor about $3.00 in parts. Teflon seals were fun to install, I used a aluminium can to install those. I suggest do alot of reading on this from various websites and transmission site. I did almost a month of research on this alone.
