Quick Help with Cloyes Timing Chain Install.
Quick Help with Cloyes Timing Chain Install.
I am in the process of trying to get the timing chain to fit properly but I cannot get it to work to any avail.
I am looking off of shoebox's site and this is what it shows the timing marks should look like.
http://shbox.com/ci/sprockets.jpg
Dot, to Dot. I have checked the #1 and #6 pistons and they are at TDC. The crank sprocket looks like it is at exactly 12 o'clock. However the timing sprocket that goes on the camshaft will not line up exactly with the sprocket that is on the crankshaft. It looks like the tooth is 1/8th off to the right of 6 oclock. If i try and move it to the next tooth it is off then by 1/4 inch to the left of six o clock.
Is there anyway to double check to make sure I am doing this correcty? I am positive that the pistons are at TDC. Is this a normal thing that you guys come across?
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Quick Help with Cloyes Timing Chain Install.
I wish it was that easy. If I rotate the cam so the dots line up, then the 3 bolt holes for the cam sprocket will not line up. I checked and I have the cloyes 9-3145 part number. I checked and made sure that #1 and #6 are at TDC.
left side (from front to back)=1,3,5,7
right side (front to back) =2,4,6,8
This is correct I would assume?..
It's got to be something simple. If I am pretty posistive that the pistons are at TDC but it still wont line up. If it looks like if i turn the crank the dots will line up fine, then is it more than likely the TDC that is off? I think I can fix it by rotating the crank a little, but the dial caliper says they are at TDC.

It is simple. Do just as I said. Rotate the cam so that when the gear is placed on it, the dots are lined up. Or temporarily put the gear on the cam (with the bolt) and line up the dots. Take the gear back of and then install the gear and chain.
Re: Quick Help with Cloyes Timing Chain Install.
Ok I did what you said and still no go. I then looked at the crank sprocket and it defiantly looked like it wasnt all the way at 12 oclock so I rotated the crank just a hair and the two sprockets lined up exactly at 12 oclock and 6 oclock. I did this with the timing chain and the gears all attached. Hopefully that is what needed to be done. I am just betting that the old dial indicator that I was using wasnt exactly accurate.
