Question on changing U Joints?

I am changing the u joint on a 97 Firebird, and am a bit confused. Probably a silly question but how in the hell do they come out???

I am used to the ones on my mustang where they have the little C clips that need to be removed and then you can pound out the U-Joint?

One this driveshaft there is no clip so do I just pound away or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

Re: Question on changing U Joints?

It's been a while since I last changed one, but as far as I remember, the c-clip is on the inside. I'm pretty sure I had to beat in one of the caps a bit so that I can remove the c-clip, then beat on the other one and it came out.

It is possible that the clip might have fallen off. One of the caps on the u-joint I was replacing was also missing one.

I'm a little lost........do you have it off the car and trying to get it apart, or are you trying to get it off the car? If you're trying to get it off the car you have to take 4 little bolts out of the u clamps holding the joint to the rear axle. other wise I THINK Ion is right, there are c-clips holding the caps on.

Re: Question on changing U Joints?

Late mod. Camaro's and Firebird's do not have "C" clips from the factory. They are secured by plastic, ie. they're glued. You have to heat the caps/yoke until the plastic flows out of the little hole in the side of the yoke. It comes out like when you squeeze a tube of RTV with a hole in the side. One of those small butane torches works great. When just press the caps off. The "C" clips will be used on the replacement u-joint.

Weird... so the one I replaced must've also been a replacement. It was on an LS1 driveshaft..... didn't look like it was replaced...
