Question about Which Clutch to go with
 

Hey there,

i was wondering if i could get some insight on which clutch/ throw out bearing seems to work well for a 1996 Camaro SS SLP LT1, the car is stock but the factory clutch needs to be replaced. i'd like to go with one that might have a little more clamping power but still has a close to factory feel.

what do you guys/gals run?

The market has changed over the years. When I had the stroker motor built, I opted for the McLeod Street Twin (a dual disc clutch). Stood up very well behind an 800 HP setup. But that would be overkill for a street car. And I don't think they make it any more. The market has changed, and some manufacturers have abandoned the LT1 market. Based on my experience you should consider McLeod.

McLeod Still makes the single disc Street Pro for the LT1 (part #75116). That's rated at 400 HP by McLeod. Tick Performance also sells it for the same price. Tick is the foremost builder of performance level parts for the T56 - shifters, adjustable master cylinder, bleeders, etc.. They run one in their Camaro LT1 that they race in an annual "manually shifted H-pattern" competition. Their destroked (329ci) LT1 stock block single turbo usually wins, with numbers like 6.61 @ 216 MPH.

I always like Ram clutches on my stock-ish vehicles. Stock pedal feel, more holding power. The HDX is pretty affordable at $435 and is advertised to hold 450HP. They're made in the USA too so that's a plus.

thank you guys for the information. as soon as i get the car and get the trans out i'll see what i need and place an order. i just want to check out the flywheel and clutch fork parts in case i need more than just the clutch. i'd like to get everything ordered in one shot so i can get the job done and get it back together. i will be taking the tail end of the trans apart as well. my uncle did some spirited driving but had a flip down head unit at the time, supposedly bent the 5-6 shift fork when he went to shift to 5th and his hand hit the head unit and forced it sideways, it won't go into 5th, but i have a shift fork on the way already which took almost 3 weeks to track down, lol. either way i'll get this thing back to like new. the trans and clutch is the only thing mechanically wrong. other than that, a paint job, dash panel and seat covers will bring it back to about 95% of new! can't wait to get it done and cruise around this summer! (don't tell my SS sedan, it might get jealous!) lol

I put in a Spec Stage 2 now going on 20 years ago and haven't touched it since. I haven't put that many miles on it, but most have been at the drag strip or the road course.
