Purpose of Resonator tube?

I recentely did my 160* thermostat and noticed that at the bottom of the intake elbow was a long plastic tube. Can someone tell me the reason why this Resonator tube is the in the first place, it doesn't lead anyway, just drops down

It's a "silencer". I think it is supposed to quiet the noise air makes when being sucked into the throttle body. Pretty much useless. The 1LE elbow has it removed. I bought one when I tore the rubber on my original. I couldn't tell any difference in sound between the two.

It is a genuine GM part. It was original equipment on f-bodies that were equipped with RPO 1LE.

GM makes it, it is the same but the hole for the silencer is not open

I never noticed any diffrerence either. IMO, don't waste your money on the 1LE for a 'mod'. If you rip your original, then maybe. But you probably will not notice anything.
