Problem running my SA rockers with new beehives.

I'm currently upgrading to a XE 224/230 and i'm running the 987 beehives with 10* locks (614-16) and comp retainers (795-16). Well I started to swap the old springs out for the new ones and noticed a problem. When i put my Crane Gold Race 1.6 SA rockers on the springs, it rides on the to side keepers instead of the roller. Am I not setting something up right or is it time to upgrade to a NSA rocker? Thanks in advance.

You guys are throwing 10deg stuff in where is is just overkill and added weight. If you had 7 deg stuff in there I doubt there would be a problem. SA rockers are designed to work with basically stock setups without guideplates...now you have gone to a race valvetrain setup and they dont fit. Either ditch the 10deg parts or get a NSA rocker set.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about that. I went with the 10* locks because i had read that they would get me closer to the right install height but I think i will go ahead and go back to 7* locks.

This might be a dumb question but will the isky locks fit into the comp retainers? and will the +.050 locks just reacreate my problem because I think that is what is causing my rockers not to sit on the valve properly.

Re: Problem running my SA rockers with new beehives.

a 7* lock wont work with the 795 retainer afaik. also i think a +.050 lock is required to get the propper installed height on a 918 beehive spring. This causes problems with SA rockers because it doesnt usually leave enough stem hanging out for the keepers to grab onto, and instead the tabs ride on the lock. the good solution if the engine is apart for work with these is to install a +.100 valve if you absolutely want to retain an SA style rocker, because then you eliminate the need for the +.050 locks but.. it requires some revision of pushrod length for proper geometry. but enough rambling, if you go to an nsa style rocker and use guide plates that should solve your problem.

thanks for all the info. I'm thinking I will go with nsa rockers so that I can keep the right install height.

Re: Problem running my SA rockers with new beehives.

i'm pretty new to all this. From what I researched, using the 4705 seats and 10* locks with the +.050 i would get and install height of 1.75". of coarse with out the +.050 i would get a height of 1.70". Now if i switched to the 7* locks with the 4705 seats I would get an install height of 1.73". I was told that 1.75 to 1.78 was optimal. How cruicial is this measurment and if it were .020 lower what difference would it make?

Speaking with Bret about this issue, when I go with Beehives of his choice, he told me to go to a NSA rocker (comp cam pro mags) becuase of the exact interference that you mention. Actually it will destroy your rockers.

Get NSA rockers and guide plates, you should be more than mint

Re: Problem running my SA rockers with new beehives.

At 1.800" installed you are already at 135# seat pressure which is perfect, dropping it down past 1.750" will create too much pressure. Plus if you run them at 1.750" you are limiting yourself to .545" lift before you start going into the .120" I like to leave before coil bind height.

So yes - your best option is to get a NSA rocker set.

so if were able to run a height more than 1.75" I would be better off? because i can get an install height of 1.77" with 7* hardware and the stock seats

Stock seats dont locate the beehive springs correctly I believe...but yes - 1.77 would be better.

So what you guys are telling me if plan to run behives I will need to ditch my new comp magnum sa rockers. If that's the case I might have to rethink what cam I will be going with.

if you run the locks with the +.050 (which I don't know of another way to get right install height without running those locks) then you will have to go NSA.
