Power Window Replacement
 

I'm going to replace my driver's side power window motor tomorrow... Any advice? About how much time should I set aside???

Hey Scott,
I have had to do this three times...if this is you're first, it will take longer than if it were the second, etc...reason being, the original motor is riveted in - the replacement motor is help in with little bolts and nuts.

I'll try to give you a quick step-by-step, remembering what I can.

1. Remove the door panel (Brent's page has more info if you need it.) And I would leave the window up...I haven't had any problems with it falling...

2. Remove the door speaker...gives you a lot more room to work with.

3. Start Drilling...just drill out the rivets holding on the existing motor...I can't remember how many there are, but the replacement will have 3 holding it in. (Don't be afraid to go the the fiberglass on the innards of your door, you'll have to go through it to mount your new one.) Look and make sure that you are drilling the rivets that hold the motor on, not the ones that hold the mounting bracket in the door.

4. After you get the old one out, line up the new one and familiarize yourself with where it is going to go. And make sure you have a plan to screw the bolts in.

5. Put in the bolts and screw on the nuts...the best I can remember, there is one in the front (toward the front of the car) on the big round part of the motor...one in the middle on the bottom of the big round part, and one on the top of the round part...

6. Plug it back in - and I would suggest running electrical tape around the connection on down to the metal neck of the motor - reason here being moisture has been the reason I have replaced my last 2, I noticed on the last one a little rust around the top...just a precaution.

I know this is very simplified, but that's just off of memory. It should help better than nothing. I will try to do a guide sometime when I find a buddy needing one replaced or something with the original in it...I will also try to do a guide with the aftermarket's...

Timewise...just do it when you aren't rushed. It takes quite a bit of time - the first time anyhow. I can do it by myself now in about an hour, but the first time took much longer. It's a pain, but it sure does feel nice when you are done...it's almost like a mod when you have gotten used to not being able to use it :D
