Powdercoat water pump?

If I powdercoat a stock waterpump will I destroy it in the baking process? Will I destroy the seal and burn the grease out of the bearing?

I want to run a mechanical stock waterpump. I want it powdercoated red.

I have a bare housing that is already red, but it is bare. Should I sent it off to a rebuilder to have a shaft and impellor mounted in it, or should I sell it and powdercoat a new stock pump?

If so, what rebuilder should I send it to?

Re: Powdercoat water pump?

TraceZ,

JMHO, I would not powder coat it. I have had a few parts (accessory brackets) coated by a "local to me" company with poor results. Maybe this has soured my opinion of powder coating but I really feel that priming and painting would be a better option. If you prime the aluminum with a good primer (zinc chromate) and use a good high temp paint, I doubt you would ever have a problem with the finish. I have used this technique on intake manifolds and such with excellent results. The one good thing about paint is that I can repair it or touch it up in the event that the finish gets damaged. With powder coating, any damage to the finish (chips, dings, scratches) usually can't easily be repaired without a complete refinishing. Just my 2 cents...

Re: Powdercoat water pump?

I'm confident in my powdercoating skills. A powder finish is 10x more durable than any paint finish could ever be. Thanks, for the suggestion, but I really do want to stay with PC. I did my intake manifold and WP housing in red and they both look flawless. I dont want to run an electric WP, though, so I need one with the impellor and shaft in it.

Anyone else have any feedback? Here is a picture of what I have so far...

Re: Powdercoat water pump?

I've powdercoated mine, but am running an electric water pump. I'd be cautious of powdercoating the stock housing with impeller and seals in place, due to the concerns you stated. Isn't the baking temperature somewhere near 400 degrees F?

Re: Powdercoat water pump?

We bake at 400 for 25 minutes. Will that kill the pump seals and bearing?

I agree, it will have to be completely disassembled otherwise it will destroy the seals and bearings. If you do powder coat it you need one of these for the front, just now with the firebird though
