ported intake

i came across this the other day on ebay and was thinking about getting it done. do yall think its a good deal or worth it? what are the pro and cons of it?

You can port the intake manifold yourself for the 58mm throttle body for free. Gasket matching offers negligible gains. A decent powdercoat job should cost around $100-$120 for an entire manifold.

IMO, not worth it.

^^^x2 just flashy painted intakes. thinking on it lloyd charges 200 bucks to p and p a intake and its about 100 to get powder coat, so for a little more u can have a very good port and polish that does help performance and a nice powder coat.

jklopez09 Apr 5, 2010 12:34 PM

yall probably right. i could care less about the powder coat, but he said that he opens up the throttle body to 52mm and gasket match the runners. im ordering parts to rebuild my motor and just came across this. is it hard to port and polish the runners? im sure i could do the 58mm on the front.

Porting the intake on an otherwise stock setup won't give you anything and could quite possibly reduce power due to slower port velocity.

He is doing something that is already done. The intake is already to have a 52 tb .Only when you are going to a 58 tb do you need that intake ported.I,m doing a 52 tb this yr.& going w a bored out stocker from a reputable shop on Ebay, some of them i,ve had had bad experiences.

when i put the engine together, it will have a cc305 with all supporting mods and the block bored 30 over. And correct me if im wrong, but arent the stock thorttle bodys 48mm? i know the stock intake manifold is 52mm, so with him boring the throttle body to 52mm and the intake manifold to 58mm with gasket matched runners i could lose power due to slower port velocity?

Yes, stock TB is 48mm.

Don't worry about "port velocity" on the throttle body. The air is flowing into a plenum, where its supposed to slow down, turn corners easier, and provide a uniform pressure so the cylinders all get similar air flow. The plenum effectively decouples the throttle body from the intake runners.

On the other hand, a "sudden contraction" (running a 58mm TB on a 52mm manifold) will cause pressure loss due to turbulence. Similarly, a "sudden expansion" (running a 52mm TB on a 58mm manifold will also cause a pressure loss, but a much smaller one. You don't want to lose (absolute) pressure in the intake system. That's what's pushing the air into the cylinder as the piston drops - more absolute pressure, the denser the air charge.

I had LE port my manifold, but sent it off to this guy for coating and polishing.

It came out looking nice.

did you feel a power difference and was it enough to be worth doing?

Yall, dont read very well!!!
From the ad.

The throttle openings will be ported to 58mm. And the runners will be gasket matched and ported.

The throttle body will be taken apart and cleaned. We will bore/port the throttle body from stock 48mm to 52mm

lol you dont read others very well... the other guys are saying that a stock manifold is already at 52mm

He is doing something that is already done.
I assume the words "He is", refers to the guy in the ad!
