Pop Rivet Mod Question on Opti Rotor
When you install the 1/8" pop rivets, do you need to insulate the rivets with anything? Am I fine with just putting them in and not worry about it.

Thats what I did. Initially my pop rivets were a touch too long so I had to cut them down on a grinder. That was all, no insulation. It wouldn't be a bad idea but how would you do it? Plus it would likely throw the balance of the rotor button off.
Oh, btw, I used aluminum rivets for what it's worth. |
Thanks for the info. I just put the last rivet in. BTW I hooked it up to my drill and it has very little vibration, less than before with the plastic rivets :)
The reason why I am going back to the stock cap and rotor is because my Msd cap kit is causing a missfire after 5 months of use. I will post up pics of what happend to it later. |
Why use rivits? Why not just red-locktite the screws in?

It's a good idea to use the loctite on the bolts in addition to this though :thumb: |
what size of a rivet is it? 1/8"?
|
rivots
yes they are 1/8" I believe I got some that crimped down to 1/16" to 1/8" had to grind a little bit off of the one towards the tip of the rotor.
Then I used red rtv to insulate the back side of the rivots. There may never be a problem not insulating them but if you go through all the trouble doing the mod, then why take a chance. Havent got mine back together yet but hopefully it fires up and runs smooth by the end of the week |
alright. just checking.

Here is what is in mine, it's been in there for almost two years. Turning close to 7000rpm every weekend. No RTV or anything.

for an 1/8 rivet the hole size corresponds correct?
|
rivets
yes 1/8" fits perfectly.
Glad to hear yours is holding up to those rpms and abuse. Gives me hope that my car will possibly stay running for whats left of the descent weather this year. |
I will never forget the first time when the stock one let go. Everything just stopped! I pretty much new what it was when there was no spark. Tried the basic stuff first, I had a spare coil and ignition module laying around tried that real quick and still nothing. Pulled the opti, heard a rattle....

opti
yea i've had it happen to me twice now so I know the sound very well. Slight pop or backfire then dead. Got mine running tonight it seems to run smoother and rev quicker with the new opti. Gotta adjust the suspension, run a battery cable from the trunk to the starter, put the exhaust on, and do some tuning to the computer. Hopefully I'll get to drive it for a couple months of good weather.
