i just posted something asking about the spark plugs and removal. my next question is what plugs/wires should i go with for a stock car and should i consider doing anything else with ignition? i havent had any problems (knock on wood) but would anyone consider changing cap or anything. still havent gotten into the opti-can-o-worms

 

For a stock car, you can go with OEM wires. Check Rock Auto for a good price on Delphi OEM wires. I've had good luck with Autolite APP106 plugs. O'Reilly's seems to have the best price on the plugs.

 

Magnecor wires are arguably the best. It's a pain in the tail job so buy the best to keep from doing it again...

Plugs, a million answers are coming. In my opinion, NGK TR55IX are about the best you can do on a stock engine if you want platinum/iridium plugs like the stockers. Drop the IX suffix and you get their standard copper version. Stay away from OEM AC Delco plugs as they have platinum pucks on the electrodes that have been known to fall off, opening up the gap significantly. Multi ground strap plugs, like the bosch setup are typically looked upon as being a bad choice. I don't have any experience with Autolite plugs in F-bodies but have had good luck with them in other high performance engines....Jag V-12 and straight 6.

 

Wires-
OEM or Taylors fit in the stock wire loom/holders. No Autolite wires. My opinion only - I got 3 brand new sets from Advance that were junk out of the box. Lots of misfire tail chasing.

Plugs-
I got a deal on OEM plugs, so I'm running those.

Opti-
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you do replace it, only do a GM replacement.

If this is just a stock daily driver, I probably wouldn't touch the ignition at all.

Stock wires work fine.

 

Anything larger then stock diameter is a PIA to route.

 

Do not buy ac delco platinum plugs. I was researching what plugs to buy for my Trans am and read noting but problems with the delco's loosing there platinum pucks. From my reading NGK plugs are the ones that have been highest recommended for stock motors. I run taylor wires with ngk plugs and they work great.

Plus for the price of a pair of delcos you can get two pairs of NGK's

 

Have been running my AC Delco platinum plugs for nearly 2 years with no problems.I am using MSD 8.5 mm wires with no problems also,just routed them my own way and used cable ties.If you want to remove the stock wires quickly just chop the boots off and they will pull straight out.
Whatever plugs and wires you choose prepare yourself for grazed forearms and knuckles and allow half a day to do the job .
If you want to change the coil,that's a nice easy job .
