Something easy to check on the noise in the rear end would be the U-joints. Check those. You didnt describe the noise to good so I really dont know what to think.

Does it do it several times or just once. If it does it just once, it may be the U-joints. Several pops when backing up, you may need to take the rear diff cover off and look around, Something may be going out in the rear end.

Yeah, now that you mention you just had gears done, I would be taking it back to them and having them look at it.

No (or wrong) limited slip additive can make it make a ton of noise (snapping, popping, groaning) when backing and turning at the same time.

That's what I was gonna suggest So I guess I'll just second that...

When I bought my Z I got $500 taken off the price for the popping sound in the rear. Changed the fluid and put in additive and voila 15 nitto DR lanuches on the track pulling a 1.7 60'

my car has always made a very faint popping when turning in reverse... I always figured it was the limited slip and was normal.
