Please help very frustrated!!!

Ok done a motor swap from 1997 Camaro z28 to 1997 firebird formula I used the original pcm from camaro I also put a new Opti on it,put new plugs and wires on it, I gutted the cats put o2 simulators on it. It cranks but is throwing p0036 code and is backfiring when u let off the throttle and also on passenger side the manifold glows orange when it heats up but I figure that is from the excess fuel being dumped to compisate for the misfire? Could it be the Opti or injectors

Check the code.... there is no P0036 in OBD-2. There is DTC 36 in OBD-1, but you indicate you used a 97 PCM.

http://shbox.com/1/Dtcs.htm

Sounds like the timing may be off. Typically caused by not indexing the cam dowel pin correctly to the Opti drive. And, no, it doesn't only go together one way. Indexing the Opti incorrectly can cause P0336, crankshaft position sensor performance/out of range, to set. Is that the code you actually got?

Or, maybe the rotor screw(s) fell out. Did you loc-tite them? Or, you bought a cheap Chinese rip-off Opti, and it's bad right out of the box.

Or, you have the plug wires routed incorrectly.

Thank you so much for replying yes that was the code sorry. I have went by shbox wiring for the spark plugs and wires. Yes it was a cheap eBay distributor. I will go buy a new one from autozone with a lifetime warranty. Will that work?

Re: Please help very frustrated!!!

Before buying a new distributor, check to see if the dowel pin was located in the correct hole. Even with a new, high quality Opti (and Auto Zone is not necessarily “high quality”), it isn’t going to run right if you don’t get the dowel pin indexed correctly.

Did the Opti seat correctly on the timing cover BEFORE you tightened the bolts? Or did you possibly use tightening the bolts to pull the Opti down against the timing cover? Common mistake. Did you check the length of the dowel pin to be sure it would fully engage the correct hole? A too short pin can slip and end up in the cloverleaf section of the Opti, and will cause P0336 to set, because the cam position signal from the Opti is out of phase with the crank position signal from the CKP sensor.

It took a few times but it did set flush without the bolts tightening it up,so as far as I know it was. I went and bought a brand new one and the mechanic is going to line it up correctly according to shbox.

Info on correct dowel pin length - read first paragraph.

Ok change Opti now KSP sensor code went away now it's throwing a p1373 any ideas

Re: Please help very frustrated!!!

P1373 is not a valid code for 97 LT1 f-body. Must have been something else.

Re: Please help very frustrated!!!

I'll take a guess.... P1371 - loss of low resolution pulse from the Opti optical cam position sensor. Could be another cheap Opti, or there could be a problem with the Opti harness connector, if that's the code.

So....is it starting, is it running better, same as before?

Rob- I gave him the link to your LT1 code list, but he must not have looked at it.
