Please help me pick a cam!!!
Please help me pick a cam!!!
I've asked a bunch of questions about cams and still haven't gotton straight answers. I've searched and read every single thread on cams, but again, nobody seems to want/have the setup I want.
Here is what I want:
1. I need to keep decent drivability and gas mileage. I'm getting about 15-17 mpg in the city now, and i can settle for going down to 12 mpg.
2. I want a decent power increase. For all the work i'm going to be doing, i don't just want 15-20 hp.
3. emmissions is no problem, we don't have them
4. tuning is no problem either, i'll get a mail order tune and fine tune...in fact, i have a cc305 and lt4 hot cam file.
5. I will be keeping stock heads now and will probably have them for a very long time.
6. I still havent decided wether i want a torque converter or not, but it is a strong posibility that i will get the TC after the cam.
I would really appreciate any help on picking the right cam with an emphasis on gas mileage and daily driveability since this is my daily driver.
Thanks!

you can see what i have it has driveability near stock with a stall i had my converter about a year befor the cam and after tunning i get 15-20more mph in th 1/4 only run 2 times since tunning. i have no numbers on times or speeds at track waiting for the hedders and gears so im not inbaressed (dont know how to spell that word) ive seen guys with same cam and similar setup run low 12's not bad daily driver good breakes good smooth acceleration slight surge at 45-50 after converter clutch locks hardly noticable unless looking with 1.6 rr good performer very drivable
racenet.com shipped mine to my door for $250.00 they have a good selaction of cams i chose this comp extreme energy pulls hard at low rpm really turns on at 3000-~6300 got 20mpg befor tunning alot better now havent checked it yet but is better

With a tune you and NORMAL driving you wont notice that huge of a difference, it's all in a good tune. Thats why I love these cars, you can do so much but as long as you have cam its all good.
I want a decent power increase. For all the work i'm going to be doing, i don't just want 15-20 hp
With no tune, expect to pick that much up, with a tune and a good set of headers, you can gain some good power.
emmissions is no problem, we don't have them
Good this will not limit your cam choice
tuning is no problem either, i'll get a mail order tune and fine tune...in fact, i have a cc305 and lt4 hot cam file
Good, atleast you got your stufftogether but dont run a 306 on a lt4 tune, a good tune will help you get the most out the cam
I will be keeping stock heads now and will probably have them for a very long time
Thats fine, most off the shelf cams work great with heads and still gain great amounts with out
I still havent decided wether i want a torque converter or not, but it is a strong posibility that i will get the TC after the cam
You want the stall, people have gotten away with it on 305 cams and LT4s, but any thing bigger a stall is a must. You really need it.

I say CC305 at the smallest, a Comp X.E grind at the largest. Get that sucker tuned, I recomend the X.E, from what I have seen it makes real good power low and mid range.
