please help. How can I get my car to run cooler??

As you can see in my sig, mycar is not stock. When I'm driving the car, the temp climbs to 180-200 on a hot day. Thats not too bad, but I have a 160 thermostat and the fan tune. None of my other LT1's ever ran that hot. The car almost overheated sitting in traffic the other day. I'm running a th350 trans. When I'm cruising, the car is at 3000 rpm. At that speed, the car is making 4lbs of boost. This is probably where most of my heat is from. I also had to cut a little off the air dam so the intercooler would get air. Any suggestions on how to cool this pig? I'm going to the track thursday and would like to try and take care of it before then. Thanks!

Since it is summer you can change your coolant mixture to include more water. 70/30 water / antifreeze should be fine. Antifreeze actually reduces the cooling efficiency of water. Also, you could try some of Redline's Water Wetter.

If you are not overheating at cruise, then the smaller air dam is doing a good enough job. If it is just overheating at idle, then that means you need to improve your fan based cooling ability. What temp are your fans coming on at?

See if you can vent the boost at part throttle into the atmosphere instead of running it back through the supercharger and heating it up. That is how my buddies blown mustang was, I'll check and see if he has any tips on doing that.

Also run more water in your coolant mixture.

My fans are tuned to run with the 160 thermostat in place. I'm not sure what exactly the temp is. Do both fans turn on when it reaches temp, or is the one fan just for the AC? I'm trying to maybe rig the fans to run all the time. Any thoughts?

If your radiator is stock You might want to take it out and have it rodded, it may be a bit stopped up?

Also watter wetter is a great suggestion.

Or the expensive route, going and getting a BE Cool radiator

I already pulled the ac condenser out along with the rest of the ac crap. I'm going to put a couple of bottles of water wetter in and do a 70/30 water antifreeze mix. Any other ideas out there?

Also, my main cooling problem seems to be in traffic or just sitting there running. I know the fans are working. You can here them running plus I checked them.

well..dunno if it'll do as much good on your setup but the manual fan switch has been the best 80 bucks i put into my car...flip that baby on and in about 15 seconds you go from 210+ to around 160 =)...not sure how that would effect a blown car tho..

I second or third the manual fan switch idea. I did mine for about 5 bucks at radio shack. Search for "diy fan switch" or something...there are many install guides out there. I love it becuase I can turn my fans on either low or high speed whenever I want. (staging lanes )

i think your car has the first/second fan setup versus the low/high.

I bet your fan tune programs the primary fan to come on at around 160 or 180 and the second one at like 210 or something. (Stock is like 235)!! See if you can get both fans to come on at 180 or 190. That should keep you around 180. With a 160 degree thermo, you will never run cooler than 160, so don't program your fans to come on earlier than that. I would just get a manual fan switch so you can decide yourself when to turn them on.

If you have the earlier fan set up (low/high) then see if you can turn on the high speed fans earlier, because the high speed fans work 1000 times better than low speed. Once I kick the fans into high, the temp drops like a rock

The amount of time & effort & most of all MONEY that you spent on your engine, it would be an excellent idea to spend the extra $$ on a Griffin/BE Cool/anything other than stock radiator.

In the meantime the manual switch sounds like a great plan right about now.

Good luck!

Water Wetter, better ratio of water to coolant, turn them damn fans on sooner!

GL, you will get it cooled dont worry.
