Placement of a CUT OUT
 

What is the best placement of a cut out? I was talking to the local muffler shop guy and he said just before the exhaust pipe goes into the muffler. I wanted it under the passenger side, but I guess there isn't enough room to weld the top. What kind of setups do you guys have? Can you post a pic? Also he quoted me $50 for everything and he would fab a custom cut out, does that sound right?

the place to put it is right when your y-pipe comes togeather under the passenger side door like you said. This is where i have mine and its the best place and you only sacrifice maybe 1/2 inch of clearance. I welded mine myself and you can get the top easy if you seperate the y-pipe from the headers and remove the cross brace that holds your exhaust up. You'll be able to pull the pipe down and weld the top very easy. Dont let the guy convice you to put it any further back because you are defeating the purpose of even having one.

Eh...I'm going to disagree. Putting it close to the cat isn't such a good idea IMO. It's obnoxiously loud, can fill the passenger compartment with fumes if the windows are down/t-tops off, and you can possibly sacrifice some low-end torque.

When I had a cutout on the stock cam, I had it right before the intermediate pipe dumped over the rear axle.

actually the only way you sacrifice torque is if the cutout where to be any closer, I've seen dyno sessions where the test to see whre you loose torque vs. how close it is and actually if it's about where i placed mine then you will actually gain a little if anything ,mine is about 15 inches after the y comes togeather .The point of a cutout is to be loud so if your putting it on you want the most out of it. dumping it at the rear axle is just like taking your muffler off. And as for the fumes i run mine open all the time and ive never had a problem with fumes what so ever.

I liked it when it was right before the over axle bend. No crazy noise in the cabin all the time, and gave me a few hp gain on the dyno when it was open.

I heard it was very nice in the middle of the i pipe to the rear axle, not right before. Kind of where the stock y pipe ends and the new i pipe meet. Odds are I'll be putting it just before the over axle pipe facing down.

im not being rude but if you guys are going to bother to do this, dump it at the passenger side under the door for the best results,. There is no fummes and it works and sounds the best. And when it gets loud just shut it. Thats what it's there for.

Are you sure under the door? I don't see how fumes could propose a problem if it's down. I could see fumes being a problem in a more closed environment. Maybe I'll throw it right under the door if I can get enough agreements to that.

yes under the door is perfect and as i said fumes are never a problem no matter what unless your car smokes like a diesel but i doubt it does. Don't face it right down just turn it a little past 45 degrees and then you wont sacrifice taking it off on any curbs.

Thanks everyone. I think I will put it just before the pipe goes over the rear end. Looks like there is plenty of room to weld and it makes sense to have it there (before the crazy bend).

but its much louder and way sweeter at WOT right under the passenger side door.

BTW how does a LT1 sound with stock manifolds? Will I still see power gains?
