pilot bushing won't come out help please!!!!!

I tried using the hydraulic method but it wouldn't work, the bearing is too worn so nothing fits snug enough. Should I try threading a bolt in there? I have no ideas, what has worked for you guys? Please help I need to get this car done soon.

Get a tap of the right size(1/2"-5/8")standard thread and thread it in and bottom it out in the crank,Then just keep tapping and jack it out..Nothing to it if it's a bushing.

Re: pilot bushing won't come out help please!!!!!

This method worked extremely well for me..

Get a wooden dowl that is a bigger diameter than your piliot bushing hole (not the outside diameter of course)

With the dowl, sand it down so that it is a nice tight fit in the bushing, even taper it a little maybe. Then cut it so it's not super long (have it about 6 inches maybe?)

Now get a bunch of toilet paper (or tissue paper, I suppose would work) And get a bowl of water. Soak the paper, and then pack it in the bushing (not too tight, you want the water to still be soaked up by the paper)

Put the dowl in and hammer it untill the paper towl in there has gone "flat"

Stuff another sobbing peice in, and repeat this. The bushing should come out noooo problem. I was very suprized how well this worked.

I like using paper towl better than grease.. much cleaner and I found it worked better.

I know you said you tried the hydraulic method already... but give that a shot.

Good luck... hope that helps.

Theres a toll they make to pull the pilot bushing out... but I never botherd to look for it...

I will tell you that my Busing was severly chewed... I mean it wasn't even a busing anymore... and I useda simple trick... the toilet paper trick... get a stocket extension... and stuf the busings with some wet tp and hammer on the back of the extension keep doing it and little by little the busing will come out. I was once in a real automotive shop with any tranny tool you need at your aid....and the TP trick owned all.

Harbor Freight sells a puller. Some auto parts stores will loan you the puller for free.

I like the wooden dowl with tp method. I will look into trying to borrow a puller but I've heard they don't work very well. I also will try the thread but where am I going to find a tap that size?

I can't help but laugh every time i see one of these threads. Messy toilet paper or grease everywhere, people struggling to find the right size dowel......

It comes out in under 10 seconds with a slide hammer. Since you obviously don't have one, you can rent/borrow them many places as was mentioned above.

THe slide hammer requires the puller tool.... Tried it that way.,.. spent $99.00 on a rental...think I already had the puller tool.... bottom line it was a waste of time... TP was free and simpler.

WELL I GOT IT!!! I used a 3/4" dowel, fit perfect, I was going to use the TP but I used grease and it came out easily. You guys have been very helpful so far thank you all.

There is a bolt supply that says they can match up my stripped pressure plate bolt with a grade 8 of the same size, what do you think?

Grade 8--6 lines on head is way stronger than the factory bolts(125,000PSI shear strength). Not needed but won't hurt.Get a matching set.
