I have the engine on the stand. I installed a new pump and metal shaft. When I primed the engine I noticed a noise, like a vibration type sound. I removed the oil pan then removed the bottom 4 bolts on the oil pump and had the pick up rewelded about 1/2 inch closer to the engine. I was thinking it was too close to the bottom. I reassembled the pump and pan and now have the same noise. I ran the pump with the pan removed, no noise. Is the noise the oil pump shaft rubbing? I installed the shaft before the pump. I did nothing else, the engine was running fine, just replaced the pump ...because it was apart. Thanks for any input. maybe Im thinking it should be noise free.

Between all the family stuff going on I only get time now and again to work on this. Does the new steel oil pump shaft go in from the bottom before installing the oil pump ? Or do Install the oil pump then the new shaft with steel collar(melling) from the top?
I did install it from the bottom before the oil pump.

You've installed the pump shaft correctly. It's impossible to drop it in from the top. The steel collar won't pass through the main cap.

It's difficult to tell what noise you're hearing but an oil pump does not operate soundlessly. The oil pan acts like an amplifier during the priming process so there is an audible rumbling sound. If you believe that there is an chance that anything out of the ordinary is going on, simply prime the motor until you have oil passing through all 16 push rods, then drop the pan and pump, remove the rod and inspect if for visible marks. I seriously doubt that you have a problem but there's no substitute for peace-of-mind.

You just moved the pickup 1/2" up from where it was without taking a physical measurement? You were just "thinking" it was too close?

That's a good way to uncover the pickup and toast the motor.
