Overheating

I have a 1996 z28 camaro...this is wat happens..........this is exactly what happens i drive it and of coarse its not hot bc its been sitting....so i start driving and its slowly heats up until at about 180 degrees which is normal and as long as i dont get ****ed at a light and have to a bunch of stop and go driving the car wil not overheat I repeat will not ive driven weeks and as long as I dont sit too long it stays coo...it will rise in temp a little bit but will go back down when i start moving......fans work perfectly but dont cool it down when at idle....now if i have no choice but to let it get to a certain heat it will continue to rise and even if i had antartica resources flown in and dumped on my engine bay it still overheats and even after i wait for it to cool down it still overheats even though i had been driving a couple of days prior no problem...took it to Christian brothers who r not christian but a-holes they said the fans work good so does evrything else but suggested to check the water pump and thermostat...put new thermostat didnt affect it....now i can only assume its the water pump but dont kno which line to pull off water pump to effeciently test to see if its pupming water.....and the air screws that r on top of the black coolant looking lines is there supposed to be coolant in there cause when i was bleeding them to relieve some pressure at its most recent overheating which was today some trickled out any help would be appreciated im moving to Lawrence in like a week and half and im about to go out of town need to get this BS over with....thanks

Re: Overheating

well, i think most everyone here has fought this battle. do some searches and you will see. i ended up replacing the wp, radiator, all hoses,thermostat(160*) and tuning for fans to come on sooner. this summer has been brutal and i can run the a/c and sit at a traffic light for 10 min and never get over the first mark on the gauge. it may not take this much to fix yours, so search and ye shall find.

Re: Overheating

Ok so this is wat has been going on as of late....purchased the prestone cooling flush fluid...used it to the T direction wise and still overheating.....are the air bleeding screws supposed to be a little open during operation or completley closed.....and im not sure if this is normal or if my system has a lot of air in it but when my air screws are open a little bit during operation air continuously comes out(although that would make sense bc the cooling system is pressurized)......im positive the WP is operating every line going to and comeing out of the WP is flowing with fluid in addition to the fact I drove it like 2 days and didnt have any problem unless I got stuck at a at a light...a bad WP would overheat moving or not....so my coolant is flowing....ive used two different types of thermostats...flushed my cooling system.....any other ideas......thanks

Re: Overheating

keep bleeding the system. fluid will run out not air when it is done. be patient. this might take several tries.

Re: Overheating

You should be using the bleed valves to get all the air out of the system. Start with the one right by the waterpump and keep going until all the air is out. Then to the other one, same thing. Then repeat the process until coolant is the only thing coming out! Air in your system would cause your car to overheat. Also, make sure your radiator cap is OK, if you're not getting a pressurized seal, air will continue to make it into your system - which is a bad thing.

Re: Overheating

Yours sounds like its 100% for sure the bleed screws. You NEED to bleed these cars or it will overheat.

Overheating Checklist:
- Blockage on the radiator (plastic bag etc).
- Is your air scoop still under the car (Forogot to put mine back on after mac headers once lol)
- Rad cap not providing enough pressure.
- Thermostat stuck
- Bleeding the System of air
- Are the Fans coming on? (Block Temp sensor/fueses)
- Blockage in the Radiator
- Engine is running psychotically lean

What temperatures are you actually seeing? You don't ever say.

Thumbs up Re: Overheating

I dont ever say because my dash temp gauge is incorrect...it is reading too hot...i dont remmember exactly the difference....this is from the mechanics so it doesnt matter...it slowly climbs up to the highest setting but my fans dont come on for another 4 minutes or so after that because my ECU is reading a different temp then my dash......yea in the bleeding process.....

What do you mean "the highest setting"? You mean it pegs out? Does it smell hot?

What does the computer say the temp is?

this is from the mechanics so it doesnt matter...
funny

Re: Overheating

Sounds like if the guage isnt working right the mech's must see something visible happening which would indicate overheating ... This would scare me because it would mean that its probably boiling over, they can smell "burning" or something crazy like that.
Heres an option if you dont have access to a computer, get a coolant temp sensor, replace the one u have on the side of the block. Get a multimeter and see what the resistance is. I'm sure Shoebox has a chart on his webpage with what Ohms = temp. (not sure how hard/easy that is on a running engine w/ stock manifolds though)

Re: Overheating

Ok from your own words (which are pretty hard to understand):
" I drove it like 2 days and didnt have any problem unless I got stuck at a at a light"
How do you know it was overheating at a light... if your guage is busted?
