There is the potential for fire having oil on the exhaust manifold. Tom Byrne had a fire under his hood due to oil and header wraps.

Do you still have your old ones? Even if they are torn a little, as long as its not too bad I think they'll get you to the store.

Oil on headers = smoke & possibly fire.

I had a valve cover leak once, not much either, just a little dribbling and it smoked quite a bit.

I'm going with the 'putting the old ripped up ones' in for now thing. Hopefully it won't leak too much..

I'm gonna drive it like that, and then swap them in the advance parking lot when I get the right ones.

Nope, no backup car, and nobody to give me a ride (Everyone's just finished moving off campus for the summer)

I'm not (knock on wood) too worried about a little oil on the headers.. I don't have any header wrap, and so nothing really combustable near there.. If I were really unlucky, I suppose some electrical wires might go up.. But I've had pleanty of oil on them (the headers) before with no problems.. (just lotsa smoke! )

My friend did exactly what you are talking about, except in a 74 nova. (pretty cool, mild 350, 4 speed, black, SS) He wound up buying plug wires too, because of the engine fire that erupted as he pulled into the parts store lot. Best of luck on your fiery journey.

I (6'4") have been seen riding my (5'6") wife's tiny little 24" bicycle to the auto parts store around the corner. it wouldn't be so bad if the front tire would hold air.

be nice if you had those little plugs that clip onto the rocker.. I use those when I adjust my vavles with teh car running..and.. sure you want to do a valve cover gasket swap in the parking lot? you have to take the alternator off.. at least I do..
