oil pump

Gentlemen,
I am replacing my oem pump. The shaft seems a little sloppy. No cracks in the nylon connection, but do new pumps come with the shaft connected and
is there any gasket that goes between the pump and the block?

Re: oil pump

Get a shaft with a metal collar. Some pumps come with shafts and some do not. A Melling Select 10554 (which I recommend) may come with a shaft. No gasket is used.

Thanks for info. Should I use the high pressure spring installed in pump or switch to standard pressure yellow spring?

Re: oil pump

I like the higher pressure spring. It's like 70#. Your bearing clearance will dictate if you even get that high.

Really appreciate the info. Just replaced all connecting and main bearings.
I am hoping for a considerable increase difference in oil pressure. Is there
a pressure relief valve in the stock melling #55 pump that will open up if
too much pressure in the system? The use of the higher pressure spring sounds tempting but I would like to stay on the safe side by avoiding too much pressure. Does the higher pressure spring react in all rpm ranges?

The high pressure spring is the pressure relief valve. With cam bearings in good shape, the pressure will reach 70-ish psi and then overcome the spring pressure. Pressure won't increase from there.

I don't think there is any concern with higher oil pressure at all. I use an recommend that pump with the higher pressure spring....

Re: oil pump

There isn't a downside to using the higher pressure spring.
