Need Help! Brakes Went Out!!

Need help immediately...
Last night on my way home, had to slam on the brakes to stop for a redlight(photo-enforcement around here). Anyways, I was going about 45ish and hit the brakes pretty hard(not the hardest I've ever hit them though). Slowed down good for about a second, and then when the pedal was about halfway to the floor, I heard a loud BAM sound and lost all brake pressure. My brake pedal under my foot when limp and all the way to the floor and I had no brakes at all. Cruised through the light at about 20 mph. Downshifted into second and then first to get going slow enough where the E-brake would stop me. I pulled off the road and into a parking spot. When i got out of the car to see what the hell had happened, I noticed that the car had dumped a puddle of brake fluid out of the bottom. It was congregated around my left front wheel and I'm not sure if it came from the brakes themselves, or the master cylinder(I think? white resevoir in the engine compartment). Either way, there was not a drop of brake fluid left in the car.
WHAT THE HELL CAUSED THIS!!?? I'm lucky to have been coming home after midnight or I would have had VERY big problems.
Also, after that happened there is a loud whining sound coming from the engine bay.
ANY IDEAS???!!!???

Hard to say. It's just a matter of looking for the source. It should not be hard to spot. It could be a brake pipe damaged by road debris.

Hard to know without looking, but maybe a broken brake line or messsed up caliper.
