Is My Rear End Trashed? Help!!!!

Whenever i floor it from a dead stop or slow roll i get this crunching/ grinding sound from underneath the car. I looked under the car tonight and i noticed this black oily gunky stuff on the rear axle housing(pumpkin) and the rear axle. I just put on a brand new tranny mount and i checked the torque arm out and it looks fine. Please tell me my rear end isn't shot. Anyone.

Just pop the cover off and see. It took me three times...of WASTING money....before I took everyone's advice and installed a 12 bolt. No money.......then let it sit. You will be glad afterwards. You can buy an old Honda or something to drive while you save up. Everyone downtalks rice until your car breaks down...then you realize the gas mileage they get.

As soon as my car is payed off, Im gonna get a bowl of rice to drive. Any build the balls out of the red beast while saving mad gas in the ricer.

I recently had a 4.10 break in my car. I put the car on a lift and was inside it reving the gas and my buddy was under the car with his hand on the housing and it was knocking like hell. Come to find out it was broken.

Since noone answered your question---check the fluid level in the diff by taking out the plug and sticking your finger in to feel for oil; you might have what I suspect I have; a leaking rear seal. I just checked mine and the oil is coming out of the rear seal by seeing all the caked black oil around the back of the pumpkin.

There is no way but to pop the cover to find out if the rear is trashed.....so no one can answer his question.

Joe:rolleyes:

If he's low on fluid his rear will make the same noise or if he's losing it out the back.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Do you mean the rearend cover or where the yolk connects to the rearend? (The yolk being what the driveshaft attaches to)

It would NOT be a wise move to NOT check the gears after running the rear out of fluid....especially with grinding noises. Think about it.

on the passenger side of the rear end is a plug hole which you stick a 3/8 socket into and unscrew to drain the fluid. look in the back of the cover.

I trashed mine when I was stock. Not sure what happend, never heard anything.

I changed the fluid one day, found a chunk. Took it in under warranty. The chunk was actually part of the diff, and fubard a lot of things. The bill was over $1400, thank god for the GMPP. :)

Thanks for the help everyone. Gonna bring it in to the shop this friday. My warranty expires in about 5 weeks. Hope it's covered
