My Horrible Findings!! Water pump, Opty, Valve Train, Transmission.....

I decided to check underneath my beast to see if everything was ok...

There was all kinds of dirt and Oil... thick very thick on and around the opty spark!! dripping down from somewhere. I got ready to fix that so I ordered parts... also I received my set of Scorpion RR's in the mail with beehive springs, locks, retainers, valve stem seals etc etc...and since I have a few days off I decided to take a look around. It all began when I touched the transmission shifter linkage at the tranny itself. I was about to fall off!! I fixed that.. Then I discovered my two outer tie rod ends were shot, front tires almost shot so I rotated them. I bought a new pair of tie rod ends and are waiting to go in ... Then I noticed oil around the intake manifold... The infamous oil leak but wait.. it gets better!! I ordered the gaskets and all.. and began to remove parts... I removed the fuel rail, (piece of cake) then to my shock I ralized that ALL and I mean ALL of the intake manifold bolts were LOOSE!! , I turned them around almost with no effort whatsoever!! maybe Two foot lbs of torque if that!! then when I removed the PCV then ruber hose that conects to the metal pipe was so brittle it broke right then and there..... "AT BOTH ENDS" yes the one that connect to the front of the intake manifold was so brittle it just broke in pieces..!!

While at it I decided to remove the valve covers ... the #8 Exhaust rocker arm pushrod was kinda loose,, funny I did not hear any valve train noise but it was loose... since I was swaping to RR's I began to remove parts... the # 8 Exhaust push rod to rocker arm conection was no receiving any lubrication... the rocker and the pushrod are worn out with marks of metal to metal contact. you can see the scratches on both easily!!! I did not see any metal shavings but that freaked me out... What do you guys think its causing this problem??

Next... I began to clean around and got to the Water pump... Bolts were not tight enough... loosened them up with no effort either.. but then When I removed one of lower Water pump bolts a huge and fast Stream of Coolant rushed out of that bolt hole!!! My first thought was a cracked water pump.. but it had to be a huge crack!! You guys should have seen how much crude was and still is on that whole area... I finally removed the pump and both gaskets were shot. I have no idea how it didnt leak out but the gaskes are just gone almost!!

Next.. the Opty Spark. 149 Thousand miles on it. I ordered one and decided to remove the old one... Some kind of dirt came out from inside one of the spark plug wire outlets (what are they called?) I removed the balancer and I was pulling on the spark plug wires and all this dirt came out from one of them... But wait it gets better than that... when I pulled one of those Vent hoses... the little one Oil began to drip from inside the Opty Spark!! How the hell did the oil get in there!! I finally removed the Opty and then I found out the two little O-rings on the Opty Shaft are gone!! I checked On the engines end and they arent there and I dont see then anywhere on the floor!!

Next... I saw some oil sipping out of the cranck shaft and I can not remove the friggin hub to replace the Seal!!

The outer ring came out easy(balancer?).. I was excited about it... but the hub is frozen solid in there!!! Before I went Ape Rape on that hub I decided to work on my Roller Rockers...AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I LOST ONE OF THE POLY LOCKS!! I turned the house upside down its not there!!! so I order a new one right?? WRONG !! I cant find anyone who sells that size of polly lock length... its got to be 1.2000 inch long, 0.600 inch outer diamether and 7/16 stud size... All polys I found were too short or too long!! Its a weekend so I email Flatlanderracing.com They replyed next day and gave me Scorpions Fone number.. I called, The first lady who answered the fone sounded like she was having a bad day... transfered me to second lady.. What a sweeheart!!! She told me she would send me one and was ready to hang up before she even knew my address and fone number!! then when I asked about how much she said she was gunna contact fed ex and call me back...hrs passed-by and I got tired of waiting so I called again.. She apologised and said she could not get a fed ex agent on the phone but she was gunna call me back right away after she tried one more time... Well she never did!!! I supposed fed ex had many calls on hold.

So I go back to the intake leak fix... I opened the Intake manifold gasket kit box and "****!!!" they gave me the wrong type and I never bothered to look at the details on the box... so now they are closed of course!!

ohh and to top it all up...my two front caliper bolts are frozen,,,, and my cars rear end is now higher on one side then the other!!

I also had lost the key to my Wheel Locks. I kept it in the hidden in the car and now its not there. I had to JackHammer then locks out one at a time

Thats all folks... if anyone has any info about oil getting into the opty spark I would greaty appreciate your help.. and How the hell do you get the Crank "monkey azz" shaft hub off?? !!

Marvin

Sorry to hear that, hopefully everything works our for you. Goodluck. I have a question I read that you ordered the tie rod for the front for you car. Mine are bad too...but The place i went ask around 600 to fix it, and that sounded too much. How much did you pick one up for. Thankx

that sounds like a rugged situation but mine is cvoming close..having lost a wheel key at the track we had to drive home with hoosier slicks on the car with about 1% life left on them..and were battling the never ending misfire with no leads..on top of that we ported the heads installed new springs and 1.6 comp pro magnums and netted 0 hp

A couple of points...

Rocker gets lubed by the pushrod opening. The holes get plugged up and, no oiling!

That "dirt" that you found in the plug wire openings is probably carbon dust from the conductor. They break down and turn to dust. The current will then arc across the opening and continue to make the opening wider until it can no longer arc the distance. You can't tell by looking at them because the insulation is intact.
My coil wire contained similar "dirt" when I got the car. It ran but made a ticking noise (the arcing inside the wire insulation).

I'm pretty sure some, if not all, of the water pump bolts go into the water passage. That's why you had the leak when you removed the bolt. Be sure to seal the bolt threads when you reinstall the pump.

Good luck!

To get the pulley off just get a 3 pronged pulley remover.
