MSD Coil questions
Odd question for ya.
About a year ago, I got an MSD 6AL Ignition module, and Blaster Coil for free. I helped a guy with his deck, and he gave me this stuff in return, brand new in the boxes.
Well, recently, I finally got around to installing the coil, and found that it was the wrong part for my 96. They changed in 1996 to a single plug connector. I couldnt exchange it, as I didnt have a reciept (for obvious reasons), and besides that, I didn't have the package anymore anyhow.
Anyhow, a very kind and helpful gentleman in my local car club, manages a parts store locally. He offered to swap them, at no cost to me. So, we put in the order. I got it yesterday. Im very grateful for his willingness to help, no doubt
Heres my Question:
He got me an MSD coil, but it's not the Blaster. Looks the same, and fits right (same size, with the now correct connector prong). But it's not labeled as a Blaster. Just an MSD PN: 8231. He ordered this, as it is supposedly a better coil than the Blaster. I can't find this coil on MSD's site anywhere, and Ive never seen or heard of it. So, Im questioning the validity of it being "better" than the Blaster. But, this guy was gracious enough to help me out, so Im not going to question
him. He went out of his way for me.
Id like to know if anyone knows anything about this coil. Is it better? It was definatly more expensive than the Blaster coil in the MSD catalog at the store. He told me this othrer coil (which
I now have) will have "better spark saturation".
Anyhoe have a few cents to throw at me?
Thanks in advance!

FROM MSD"s WEBSITE Blaster Replacement Coils
When it comes to late model performance parts, nothing beats bolt-on and direct connection components. Especially when they improve performance with a hotter spark like these new MSD Blaster Coils. These new bolt-in coils are designed with improved materials and windings to produce a stronger spark. This improved spark helps burn the fuel mixture more efficiently resulting in a smooth idle and improved mid range rpm power.
MSD is pleased to offer these performance coils for the following applications. They look great in MSD red and will connect to the factory wiring.
GM 2-Tower Coil Pack used on vehicles from the mid 1980s to late 1990s PN 8224
GM Single Connector Coil, for 1996-1997 GM vehicles PN 8231
Late Model Dodge, 2-Pin Connector PN 8228
Mitsubishi 4-Tower PN 8229
Ford Coil Pack, 4-Tower for 1995-1998 PN 8241

Thanks for that info

However, this isn't a "Blaster" coil. Its a different unit. It isn't the Blaster. It's black, and only has an 'MSD' sticker on it- not the 'MSD Blaster' sticker that the one I swapped this for had.

George, I am sure yours looks like this. I realize it does not say "blaster" on it. The blurb does say it is a 40,000v coil. I don't know that I have seen a published figure for the earlier blaster coil, so I have nothing to compare. It has only been within the last year that MSD has even offered a replacement for the single connector GM coil.

I appreciate it!Ill just assume its a blaster, labeled differently for the single connector version. As long as its a step up from stock, I dont suppose theres anything to complain about- especially since I didnt have to pay a cent for it

Thanks guys!
