Thanks Shawn, I read that post and a lot of the questions I had like lifters, rockers, etc helped me go in the right direction.

425 crank, and even that seems high. ~330 rwhp with the lt4 combo is typically seen.

Any cam that hits 400rwhp is not going to be 'sleeperish', and if you want driveability with that much power, go for added cubes, as the lowend sure is nice driving around town.

There is no such thing as a low budget, 400rwhp, great gas mileage, sleeper LT1, not all motor atleast.
My setup in my sig was low budget, execellant driveabliity, probably 400rwhp when tuned(never did dyno the damn thing again, but did 384rwhp with a base tune through an automatic), through the stock catback and a high idle sounded like a stock cam(although it did sound like it had an aftermarket catback), and I got 21-22mph highway/city mix and 16-18 all city/racing(thats with a 3000 stall and 3.73's also). I had so many people call BS on me being all motor. Damn I miss that setup.

Re: Most streetable 400ish rwhp combo

A good very streetable combo in my opinion is a 383.

You don't have to rev the motor to make power,a big cam seems milder with the cubes, and it will feel like a monster around town on street tires.

If youre wanting strickly N/A I would do this.

Eagle or scat cast steel crank, scat or eagle I beam 5.7 rods, KB pistons to save money (16-18cc dish), Have balanced with factory flex/flywheel and harmonic dampener, then add a set of very well ported heads (your choice) and a healthy cam, (the 230/236 is nice and the 224/230 sounds very tame in the motor).

When I first put my motor together I had the 224/230 in it, it was as streetable and carefree as the stock motor except it had 3 times the torque (in feel). It would wind up to 6000 rpm and gave me consistant mid to low 12 1/4s with poor 60 foot times(2.2s to 2.4s). With the exact set-up I switched to the GM 847 cam , it took the edge off the torque (still more than enough) and gave it a choppy idle but still manageable. With a lazy sub 2.0 launch at the track I run 12.0s to high 11s without effort.
I'm starting to build the car more for 1/4 mile times so with some suspension and stuff I expect to shave a good 3 to 5 tenths off.

Any car with a 3000 stall is not what I would call sleeperish. And as far as low budget, I guess I assume $2000 to be a low budget heads/cam setup, and with all the mods you did to keep it close to stock sounding, you were in it for well more than that. I also find it hard to believe that you got that gas mileage, but thats your word against mine. When I post my gas mileage results, I don't talk about the freak one time kinda things, I average it out.

How would a 3000 stall make it not sleeperish? I bought a stock catback for $30 and then a electric cutout for $170 shipped in a GP. Heads/cam combo cost me ~$1300 including the rockers/springs/porting/polishing/intake porting/pushrods/etc. Best I got with the car was 23mpg highway/city mix, and I AVERAGED 21mpg all the time. The cam was so small that my gas mileage was great. So far with the 383 and 3600 stall I was getting 12-13mph on break in but it needed to be tuned still.

Thumbs up Re: Most streetable 400ish rwhp combo

1997 Formula, stock bottem end, Lloyd Elliot ported heads and intake, SMALL Joe Overton cam(~220/226), 3000 stall, 3.73's, 30lb injectors, pcmforless tune, jet hot long tubes, all the other little stuff....

11.710 at 116.76 in 2350DA ALL MOTOR
I like your setup a lot, very convincing times, too!

Re: Most streetable 400ish rwhp combo

You dont have to have a giant cam to run fast. Most of the people who dyno 400rwhp spin the motor to 6500 rpm to do it!. I believe the hotcam with awesome heads could easily get a guy into the 11s and keep the car very streetable at the same time. GM847 is massive.. i wouldnt want that cam in my car!
