Modifying bumper for ram air, any suggestions?
Modifying bumper for ram air, any suggestions?
For a long time i have been trying to decide on what intake to use when i do my LE2 swap. I have an Ebay cold air intake which works fine, but i have decided to make one myself by modifying my firebird stock bumper.
I would removed the styrofam support and the crash bar, maybe rivit some steel for reinforcment inside, put some mesh over the front, and maybe create sort of a box inside to surround the filter. Here is my idea. It's a rough paint and i made the filter smaller than it woudl actually be. It would actually fill the enire cut away area and you wouldnt see the piping. It's a K&N 18x7 round straight filter with a 4" ID.

I know it wouldnt really ram air, but it would be cold air, and maybe for forcing a little into the filter. I would route 3" PVC pipe to fit it all. Any ideas on if i should relocate the MAF, or the other hoses?
Thanks,
Shawn

That's a hell of a lot of work to do the same thing that an aftermarket CAI does. I don't suppose it would be visually appealing either. I'd ditch the eBay intake and get a real CAI. You'll get the same results for cheaper, and a LOT less work.
Re: Modifying bumper for ram air, any suggestions?
Well i will be removing the bumper support and styrofoam to save a few pounds. Visually it probably wouldnt look that good, but it would be differnt.
Re: Modifying bumper for ram air, any suggestions?
Well the hood i have isnt the best looking either... lol. It's just different. The car will have an LE2 setup with 3" TDs and x pipe, so it will sound nice, and it should be aroudn 400rwhp and run 11s so it should perform nice. The looks will be excentric with that in mind.
Re: Modifying bumper for ram air, any suggestions?
I've been kicking back and forth some ideas about better air induction myself....I've been leaning toward fitting an ls1 clear lid(using the ls1 core support) and using something similar to the FTRA that pulls air from the air dam area where the radiator gets its air.
I also thought about cutting out the bumper like you were saying and losing the windshield washer reservoir, styrofoam, and bumper support, then using that to feed the air lid so its not taking air from the radiator.
Anyways, whatever way I end up doing it, its GOT to look good. I'm a freak when it comes to things looking clean, for example: I removed the ABS system because I didn't like the way the motor/pump looked under the hood......

Re: Modifying bumper for ram air, any suggestions?
I'm not a clean person, whatever i have to do has to be 100% efficient though. If i do something, it needs to do what it was intended for, and do it perfectly. I'm more of a freak about mechanical efficiency and stuff. If there is a way to make the car fast and maintain it's functionality i will do it. I forgot about the windsheild squirters. Mine have never worked as long as i have had it so it doesnt matter, and my ABS is disabled so i could remove that.
