LS1 lifters fit into LT1?

I’m building a 396 stroker LT1 and am planning on using the Howard’s Cams 91174 Variable Valve timing LS1 lifters.

Will the LS1 lifters work in the LT1 engine?
The diameter seems the same.
I think I read people are using LS7 lifters in the LT1.

Thanks for any help.

Re: LS1 lifters fit into LT1?

While I have never uses LSx lifters in the LT1 several have …..and some have had issues. LS7 motor has lighter (sodium filled) valves vs the solid heavier LT1 valves so that "may" be a reason some have had issues with LS7 lifters in a LT1. Perhaps more issues using them with high lift cams and higher than stock spring rates.

IMHO I would and did get LT1 specific lifters, Comp 850's, when I built my 383 which now has about 40+k mi on it.. YMMV

Yes LS7 lifters "fit" in the LT1. IIRC the cup (top) sits a little lower in the lifter which can affect PR length. Whatever lifter you do use, measure PR length for your new motor to get the right length

Re: LS1 lifters fit into LT1?

Thanks for the reply.
The very first lifters I wanted to go with was the 850’s but I heard a lot of bad rap on those on this website. So now I’m confused. You have a lot of miles on yours with no issues sounds like there not bad.
I just really like the variable valve timing lifters by Howard’s cams 91174. And yes I have a pushrod length measuring tool.

This is is what they claim
OE Style Variable Duration Chevrolet Gen III (LS-Series) Hyd Roller Lifters Maximum low end torque without sacrifice of mid or top end power. More vacuum (up to 3 in.) and better fuel economy. Effectively lowers cam duration by approximately 10 degrees, up to 3000 rpm. F or use in OE hydraulic roller blocks. Note: These lifter produce a mild ticking sound (similar to mech. lifters). Made in the USA!

Re: LS1 lifters fit into LT1?

Not familiar with the Howards "variable timing" lifters....not really a type I would use in a LT1 or older "non variable timing" motor

I am sure there are bad reports on any part. Never read one about 850's. The Comp 875's did get bad reports. IMHO because people WAY over lashed them as they are "short" travel lifters you go zero to 1/8 turn max on preload

IDK if Comp makes their lifters or they are just rebranded Melling LT1 lifters. The later I would not have a problem with but have never used them. JB7029

I have read several threads on LS7 lifters issues though but have no direct experience with them.

Re: LS1 lifters fit into LT1?

The Howard’s VVT lifters are a copy of the infamous Rhoads lifters, intended to make a big cam act like a smaller cam at low RPM, smoother idle, less surge, etc. No idea how effective this is, but why not ask Howard’s if they are a good “fit” for the LT1?

Re: LS1 lifters fit into LT1?

Thanks for all the info guys.
I purchased a set of 850’s from summit for $175.00 with my discount. Regular 199.00 better than the $250 for Howard’s.

Are the 850’s also zero lash to 1/8” turn.

Cheets

No, 850's are like regular lifters 1/2 to 1 1/2 turns of preload.

The 875's are the short travel ones where 0-1/8 turns is required
