MAC headers for 97?????

Who has them and how do you like them? Im not looking for the BEST header for my car, im looking for a GOOD header that is cheap. I really wanted the AS&M headers, but that is a little too rich for my blood. I want to keep it emissions legal and all that junk, but also want actual mid length headers, so i dont want the shortie style. Anyone got any pics of the headers on their car? Any ground clearance loss?? Thanks guys and gals!

You can not get emissions legal mid-length headers for a dual cat car. To get mid-length headers on a dual cat car requires moving the driver's side cat, which is not legal. Now, having said that, you can fit single cat mid-length headers on a dual cat car and it will pass emissions using a single cat. To answer your initial question, yes MAC makes dual cat headers for 96-97 cars, but they are not mid lenght, nor are any other dual cat, emissions legal header.

Thanks for the reply. I didnt quite mean emissions legal in that way. I dont have a visual inspection, and dont really have a smog either, but i want to keep it from getting raspy, so I want a cat. Yeah, I was looking at getting a dual cat to single cat conversion. How easy is that to do?

Shouldn't be much more difficult than a normal header install. The main catch is you will either need a 94/95 catback or you'll need an exhaust shop to fab up a connector from the header system to the catback.

an S pipe to connect your 96-97 catback to the 93-95 headers.
thunderracing sells them.

i had RKsport headers they are identical to AS&M headers (mid length 1 3/4" single cat) the only differerence is the ASM has a better ceramic coating.

the RKsport ceramic coating isnt bad though, a good value $590 and includes a ceramic coated y pipe.

there are two cats with the 96-97 mac system. im not really sure what kinda moving of the cat you are talking about, but i have the dual cat mac headers on my car. the driver side cat is where the original one was. it is a pain in the butt to get the y-pipe bolted up to the header because of the location of that cat. the o2s plug in with no extenders so i dont think it is moved at all.

The original poster said he wanted mid-length headers, the dual cat headers are not mid-length, they are shorties (very short) on the driver's side due to the position of the cat. The passenger side is mid-length like their 94/95 mid lenght header setup.

i was thinking of getting the macs too, but i have a 97 dual cat car also. my question is that everyone is talking about the 97 headers being shortys Vs. mids, but they are both macs right? so would there be much of a HP dif between the 94-95, and 96-97?? and also i dont understand what u mean on how u could make the 94-95 models fit on my 97. could someone please explain this a little better, thanx. later

As I stated above, the 96/97 headers are shorties on the driver's side and mids on the passenger side. This is due to the placement of the cats. The 94/95 headers use mids on both sides since the single cat is placed under the hump in the passenger floorboard. The 94/95 headers will fit just fine on a 96/97 car, the only additional things you will need are:
a 94/95 cat or off-road pipe
an "S" pipe to mate up the cat/off-road pipe to the cat-back
possibly adaptors to mate up the emissions fittings on the headers, or disable AIR and EGR and just plug the fittings.

i do not wish to argue with you but i think you are wrong about the fact that the driver side is a shorty...i think if you actually bend the pipes out straight you will find they are the same length on both sides...the driverside curves up similar to that of the impala headers and has a lot of curvature.

i contacted mac about this and they said they are very close to the same length.

94/95 style:

96/97 style:

Even if they were the same length (which I really doubt), they have a really sharp bend which is going to cause issues with the flow.
