LTCC coil install W/Pics
I am installing my LTCC setup and working on using the stock brackets of a 5.3 truck. (I was already told not to use the coils but I don't have a dime in them so I am going to see what happens) I am also going to dyno the car with the functional optispark , then switch it over to the ltcc setup and see how much of a difference if any it makes. And if I need to will install a new opti to. I will keep you guys updated with any data I come across.

Spent some time after work finishing up on the RT side coil bracket. Now I just have to finish up the LT side this week and it's on to install the wiring. I still need to get some new plug wires and plugs.

Great job on fabbing those brackets to the VC's.
Looking forward to your comparison of LTCC vs Stock Opti - Try to document weather conditions, oil temp and water temp to control for enviromental differences that will affect HP #'s |
Yeah good job so far. I have my coils, but have not purchased the LTCC yet. I am going to purchase soon however. I want to get my car running and everything first and then tackle this. (to keep things simple in case of any issues breaking in motor.)
I am going to sit down and look at the brackets on the LS7 coils that I have and figure out what works best for me. I forget where I saw it, but liked them mounted underneath the cowl area. |
Everyone has their own setup for mounting the coils. I got my LTCC in 2003 and have mounted them in 4 different fashions in the past and none of them has been like I've seen anyone else do theirs. Lol... Thunderracing sells a "mount under the cowl" kit to which you're referring. The author of the post said he paid $50 for the kit but he must have ordered it on the phone sans the plug wire kit because their website shows the kit and the longer LS1 wires (it's intended primarily for LS1's) as a package for around $200, if memory serves.

Nice work so far. How much does a conversion like that run?

without the coils it's 400 bucks. Then you have to buy coils (new or used) Plug wires, brakets, New opti if the old one is not working right. So it can be up to 800-1000 depending on the opti and coils you find. |
I just bought a new setup for my 2nd Z28. $399 for the LTCC box itself. $80 for all 8 coils and the LS1 wiring harness. A bracket can be hand made for very little. My last one was like this. It costs about $2x.xx for the Aluminum ladder extension.

I got the car together now. I ended up just going ahead and pulling off the old plug wires and running the new setup since I had to pull the alt and p.s. pump to get the old wires out of the way. I also had to replace a header gasket on the rt side. The car seems to run just fine on the 5.3 truck coils. It will be a few weeks before I can get it to the dyno. I still need to get some parts for my nitrous kit and I am leaving for vacation in a week. I will let you guys know what it does.

Thanks guys. I am having some starting issues with the battery being in the back. After the car warms up I have to let it sit atleast 10 min before it will start back up. I can put a jumper box on the Power distubution point and it fires right up when hot. I have 2 gauge wire running from the battery. I might need to get 0 gauge wire.
