LT4 same as ZZ4 cam?

My engine was just rebuilt (I'm going to pick it up tomorrow) and one of the things I had done to the motor was to put in an LT4 Hot Cam. My mechanic sent me the invoice today and I saw that instead of the LT4 hotcam, he put in a ZZ4 cam. I called him to ask about this and he told me that they're the same cam.

Is this true? My motor is all stock except for the cam, will it run ok with a ZZ4? Btw I have a 94 Z28.

Also, because I thought I was getting an LT4 cam, I got pcmforless to send me a new program for the pcm....but now that I have the zz4, will I need a new program again? Or are the two compatible?

TIA for all advice!

LT4 Hot Cam 218*/228* .525'' .525'' 112 LSA
compare those to the ZZ4 cam... btw I've never heard of a "ZZ4 cam" but it could be that the hot cam comes in the ZZ4...

Just looked at the cam that comes with the ZZ4 and it's different than the LT4.

ZZ4: 208* 221* .474'' .510'' smaller cam...

Could it be the TPIS ZZ-409 I got this off of there web site
ZZ-409 Hyd Roller:

Adv. duration 287/287, duration @.050 226/226, Lift .520/.520. 112 LSA

What is the adv dur on the hot cam? Looks similar but the lift on the ZZ-409 is probably with 1.5 rr's and the hot cam is rated with 1.6 rr's I think correct me if I am wrong.

The ZZ3/4 cam is nice, but is mellow enough to be mistaken for stock, probably not what you want if you asked for the HOT cam. It is what I have in my Caprice, and have plans for something bigger. I would just contact Bryan about the tune. I am sorry to say though that if a builder did that to me I would forever worry about his competence to build a motor.

On the TPIS thing, they are pricey so he would have noticed more than a wrong part description, and if you are cam shopping think about this that cam is a single pattern, ALL the popular cams are split pattern. There is a reason for this, the LT1 in true smallblock Chevy fashion is weak on the exhaust side so it needs a bit more help there, hence the bigger duration (and usually lift) you see in the vast majority of cams, a single pattern would likely be a poor choice unless your head porter told you to run one.

I really don't understand what this TPIS means....to be honest I don't know much about cams at all.

I guess I just want to know if it will be safe to run the ZZ4 cam in my motor, or will it hurt the engine in any way? I've been without my car for almost 2 months and right now I just want to get it back (I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow). Or should I insist that he replace the ZZ4 with the lt4 or stock cam?

TPIS Tuned Port Induction Specialists TPIS If I told a builder to build my engine with a Hot Cam and that was what I wanted then I would expect him to build it with that cam. If you settle for the ZZ4 then you will always wonder how your car would have ran with the Hot Cam. Get what you want the ZZ4 sounds mild as 96capricemgr has said.

I would be ticked if I told them LT4 Hot cam and they put in a ZZ4. They are not the same. A ZZ4 crate engine has a recommended max rpm of 5800. The Hot cam will make power well above that.

The ZZ3/4 is considered about the smallest cam worth the trouble of swapping to over on the b-body boards, and the ZZ4 motor power number while yes through lesser heads(the LT1 heads blow the L89 heads out of the water) are also with a dual plane intake which is bumping up the torque. This cam keeps similar lowend in the b-body but extends usable HP to higher rpms. Now I have not driven a Camaro to compare to but I think you would gain lowend and extend the powerband to a little higher rpm.

If it were me.....Ild have him take it out and put the lt4 hotcam in. He's a liar or incompetent if he told you they are the same. He probably had the zz4 lay'n around, so he used it and charged you for a new one. Dont get jacked around on this....get the hotcam.

I talked to him today and he said it was a typo....he says he actually installed the LT4 hot cam....I guess I'll have to trust him on this one.

I would be a little suspicious if he said that they are one and the same first and then changed his story and said he made a typo. The hotcam is much better then the ZZ4 cam and i would make sure that you got the hotcam.

I agree with being suspicious...Also those lift numbers for the HOT cam are based on using 1.6 rockers...Make sure those are in there, too...

Yeah....ask him for the box and papers that came with the hotcam....grindcard ,ect. 10 to 1 ...he'll say he threw those away. Sounds like he's full of BS.
