lt4 cam compared to CC306

how much gain would someone see with the cc306 over the lt4 hotcam? if you already had the hotcam kit in your car could you do a simple cam swap, or would other stuff be needed? any help would be appreciated for future knowledge. thanx

I went from 372 RWHP w/hotcam to 397RWHP with a XE 230/236. The gains would be comparable with a 306. You would need new springs and retainers.

another question about the cc306, what is the rpm band on it? and how much would i be looking at for the spring and retainer kit?

or would any of the XE cams be a better selection?
and if i decided to go with the xe230/236 would i still have to switch springs and retainers since the lift doesnt exceed .525.
opinions and suggestions would be great. and if anyone was wondering, it is on a M6

people spin the 306 up to almost 7000rpm. 6600 to 6900 is what I have seen. I would look into a xe grind though. there was a dyno post where someone made 350rwhp with stock heads and the xe218/224. Look into them and see if you like one of them or I would call speed inc or combination motorsports and ask them about a custom grind camshaft. It will work best with your current setup.

Springs and retainers would be around $130 and yes you would still need them for the xe 230/236.

Depends on how you drive......I tend to stay well in the powerband when driving around town so I get about 13mpg around town.....now on a long trip on the highway in 6th gear most of the time I get 22mpg with the ac on.....not to bad for a 11 sec ride

As far as drivability....get it properly tuned and you will be fine.

and that is with the xe230/236. damn thats good. what gears do you have? also what would the lift be with 1.6 rockers on your cam, and if you have it on the cc306.

i bought the hotcam kit, but i am finding out that it looks like it wouldnt even be worth it, ans since i have the engine ut of the car i need to find something that i will be happy with a couple months from now and now something i have to settle with.

I made 351 STD or 343 SAE J1349. Tq and HP. Peak was at 5700 so i'll be shifitng at 6200. I could have listened to Rich and gone with a 110 LSA and had it peak even a lil higher. Hindsight is 20/20

Here is someone elses 306 dyno with very similar mods and put down the same tq, +5 hp. Edit* I should mention i have an electric waterpump on him, but he has longtubes to my shorties. My tuning may also be better because he's still playing with his.

http://bellsouthpwp.net/L/T/LT1ultra...ngine/Dyno.jpg

The 306 will keep the tq up past 6k rpms where mine drops off.

Do you want to spin that high?

This is for stock heads?

IMHO the 306 will pick up 15 hp over the hotcam, but your gonna be spinning your shortblock HIGH and stressing your vavletrain more.

the heads have had a port and polish job, and a rolling valve job.
what about driveability though? i have also heard tht the xe218/224 has a choppy idle, is that true?

thanx

The first one is a cold start so there really isn't any chop due to the slightly elevated idle. The second one is warm.

It has slightly less overlap(cchop) than the hotcam because of the shorter advertised duration but higher ramp rates to achieve similar .05 lift numbers. I'd recommend it on a 110 though because there is still PLENTY of low end.

The 224/230 might be justified by the ported heads. Bigger isn't always better with a cam though

You still didn't say what shift point your comfortable with, stock bottem end?

have u considered the Comp 305 (220/230, .510"/.510", 114 LSA (Lift is With 1.5:1 Rocker Ratio)...great cam for bolt-on cars, and it doesnt require much, if any tuning....just get it custom ground with a 112 LSA and run 1.6 rockers..and the lift should go to .525/.525

if i remember correctly the hotcam is a 218/224 dur. from what i have read on here so far, almost everyone wishes they would of went with something bigger, just dont want to make that same mistake.
my current mods are: M6, moroso cai, bbk TB 58mm, msd 6al, msd coil, msd wires, jet hot long tubes ( no cat ) w/ flowmaster, foreged rotating assembly including wiesco 11:1 pistons, mcleod clutch, lca's, ranhard rod, torque arm, heads are ported and polished ( sorry no numbers), pro 5.0 shifter.

as for my shift point around 6000 would be fine. also iin the near future 4:10 gears with ta girdle

oh yeh, your car sounds great.

from what i have always been told going from a 112 LSA to a 110 LSA would make your car peak at a lower rpm, not a higher one.

I'm one of those person who wishes they would of went with something bigger.... Bigger is always better
(Now that I'm building an engine from the ground up, the cam choise is up again for me too). I haven't bought any cam yet, probably will be my last item, because there are so many opetions.) Many poeple are happy with their daily drive cc306, so I might go with it too.
