LT1's problems
 

Im looking at getting a 1997 z28 Auto w/ 100K miles. Do any of yall other LT1 owners have any problems with the car with that many miles.? And if you do can you tell me what they are so i can be aware of them before I buy this car.

100k on a well maintained z is nothing

What LT1_03 said however, you will hear concerns about the "opti" which is the distributor. If it runs fine now then don't worry about and get the car. :)

Any vehicle, no matter what brand or style, with 100k on the clock and 6 years on the road needs to be looked at for brakes, hoses, belts, tie rods, tires, rattles, rust, and other assorted maintenence items.

A few other folks may chime in, but the most common items I can think of as problem points for every day drivers would be power windows working slowly, window tracks, coil and optispark issues, and check to see if the rear has been abused (clunking), or if its a manual, make sure the synchros don't grind and it goes into gear when the clutch is hot. If it is an auto, get on it a bit to make sure the tranny doesn't slip. I say this not because anything is wrong with the cars, just that with a V8 and rear wheel drive they are sometimes driven hard.

Try and get the second set of keys too as they are expensive to have made up.

The only other problem in mine has been the wondow switches on the driver side needing to be replaced and my CD player doesn't work unless it is at least 90 degrees outside.

Mine has been a very good car. I got 135,000 miles out of the motor which doesn't sound like much but add 1500 dragstrip passes to it (and I abused the crap out of it). I bet the original motor would have gone well over 200,000 miles had I not beat it to death.

145,000 on mine and no real trouble. The opti and water pump have been replaced along with the passenger window motor. But it STILL doesn't burn a drop of oil ( I use Mobil 1 5-30) so knock on wood (my head's getting sore), everything is is working!

Check for the oil leak at the back of the intake manifold - very common problem with these cars.

Other common problems are that your right foot will gain about 30 lbs. in the first week alone;) LOL!

Seriously, check the car for the coomon stuff said before, and check the front bumper and see if the coves around the headlights, are painted black if not that means that the front bumper has been replaced and a wreck may have happened. You wouldn't believe how many people repaint the front bumper solid when they all have some black on them around the headlights and the grill. Later, Kris.
