Question LT1 Valve train

I've got a 95 Z28 that I just rebuilt....I went with 1.6 rollers....I was wondering how far I need to go on the adjustments past zero lash? Also, I have 5 lifters that have not pumped up yet and I have 125 miles on the motor..what can I do to pump them up? Lastly, what should my idle be set at...its a 6spd...and I want to be able to hear the cam. Thanks

Re: LT1 Valve train

Factory recommends 3/4 turn past zero but i go around 1/2 turn past zero. The lifters should pump up almost immediatly after you run the engine, if it's been sitting for a while just crank it over for 15 seconds or so. What kind of cam do you have? If it's stock you're not going to hear any lope, idle should be set around 650-750.

Re: LT1 Valve train

I'm running the Comp XE 227/233 .560/.569 on a 114, the computer was set to idle at 900 but its actually idiling at 1000 for some reason...I guess i'm gonna have to send it back and have him drop it. Is it the idle thats not letting me hear the lope very well? That cam should lope pretty hard shouldn't it? My lifters are pumping up one by one lol...i've got the rockers adjusted at 1/4 past zero lash so i'll tear it back down and re adjust.....that could be some of my problem.

Re: LT1 Valve train

The cam wont lope or chop very hard so its mainly the cam not the idle. What lifters are you running? Thats going to determine how you set the preload.

Re: LT1 Valve train

that cam should still have some noticable lope to it after the idle gets turned down. Also he was referring to lifters not rockers, the specs i gave your are for factory lifters, if you're using comp r's they use a lot less preload.

You'll make the most power with 1/4 turn past 0.

Re: LT1 Valve train

just a thought pertaining to your higher than set idle....Are you looking at the tach when you read the rpms or from a scanner? my car is set to idle at 950 but the tach shows 1050. Just kinda shows the tach can be off a bit.

Exactly what I was going to say. Our cars are notorious for the tach being slightly off around idle.

Also, what size rocker studs are you using? If you are using 7/16" studs, then I recommend 3/8 turn past zero lash. If you have 3/8" studs, then I recommend 1/2 turn past zero lash. This is due to the different thread pitch between the type of studs you might be using.

Re: LT1 Valve train

I've checked my rpm's up to 3,000 with my scanner and I'm pretty confident that if the needle was turned back about 200 rpm it would be dead on.

Re: LT1 Valve train

ya i wouldn't go by the stock tach, they are notorious for being inaccurate. Some cars are dead on but others are way off, my 97z used to shift at 6200 rpms but inreality was shifting at 5750.
